New 84 Explorer day, and I'm Pissed!

So the first of two Gibson 84 Explorers I ordered arrived today and it has tons of finish flaws. I tried to take pictures of all of them, but I couldn't get them to come out. It's a shame because it plays and sounds really good. Not as nice as my MX's, but still really good. The first flaw I noticed was a finish crack around the neck joint. I could have lived with that since it's a common problem that probably would have happened eventually anyway. The next flaw was a small pinhole behind the bridge towards the edge of the body. Again, not a huge deal except that there was a brownish discoloration around the hole. Next, the fretboard edges had quite a bit of overspray on them, which really stuck out against the dark ebony board. The worst flaw of all was a patch on the back of the body about 5 inches by 3 inches that had an almost completely flat finish, and feels rough to the touch. I can only assume that it got missed in the buffing process. Finally, the entire neck seemed to have too much nitro on it which left a severe orange peel finish, and a bumpy and sticky feel to it. It's going back tommorrow, but I still snapped a few quick pics. Hopefully the next one will be better, but It definitely made me think about just getting another MX. My white MX that I got a couple of weeks ago just blows this thing away, but like I said the next one may be a winner.

I tried to show the overspray, but it's still hard to see. It's the only flaw that
I could get the camera to show at all though.

Yet mine is damn near flawless.

Sorry about your guitar Tony. I hope the next one is better.

Try wiping that overspray off the fretboard. You might find it comes right off. I saw that on one of the other ones I didn't take at my shop, and I just rubbed it with my finger and it came right off.

My R8 is flawless. Perhaps with a small run of only 400 guitars they should have made these in the custom shop and charged 3x the price

I'm sorry to hear that. I feel very lucky that all of my new Gibsons this year... LPC silverburst, ES-339, and Robot guitAr were all PERFECT. It must've been because the two were CS and the robot had to be impressive because it was breaking new ground. What a shame, though. I guess it just depends on if you get lucky?

That's such a shame. I had one on a preorder for around $1k but I cancelled it because I had just bought a bunch of stupid Metclub limited edition stuff. I guess I should be happy that I didn't run into these problems. But then again, for that price, I might have been play with those flaws.

Mine has literally none of the flaws these dudes seem to be having. I dunno how or why, but mine is clean, and I'm one satisfied customer. I'd buy another Gibson in a heartbeat.

Shit, I feel lucky just have the side markers off center! That's like one of the laundry list of shit gone wrong with these things. Someone probably just rushed all these out.

Gibson has been behind on these last Guitar of the Weeks. Maybe they did rush them out to minimize lateness.

sad about the flaws on that one, return/exchange it,

but as for this = gibson can't build a guitar right, i bet of the x-% that come with flaws, 100% get reported on the interwebz.
we'll hardly hear from the 9X% of buyers who got a great one. DA though posted.

my R8 and LPC are awesome fwiw, granted are CS.

maybe i should post of all my gibson production model ones that are also flawless. the list would be pretty long.

nah, why do i care what the rest of guitarists buy or don't buy, gibson isn't paying me to endorse their wares, why take the time to type? you cats just stay away from gibson, then the prices will be forced down, and i'll be able to continue to buy them even easier. haha
