It is probably the one you are thinking of. I had the old one back in the day. This one is probably double the originals size. It is also very, very detailed. We bought it at wal-mart. It was originally $150 and on sale for $59. So I couldn't pass it up!

Yeah, the X3 is VERY touchy

The key on most of the models is to adjust the gain, presence and treble as low as you can before it sounds too muddy or not enough gainy. This has worked for me.
Try to fiddle around with the Smoothcriminal patch which comes with the X3 I think.
I can mail you my 5150/Herbert patch at somepoint, probably later this evening or tomorrow if you wanna check that out. Gotta fetch the X3L from our rehearsal place first
