Read a couple of posts that claim the satin finish will fade. Whats the best way to make it last ALAP?
btw, I have an EC-500s on order. I hate ESP flag inlays.

by not playing it. the oils from your skin sink into the finish and gloss it up.
you can make it last a little longer by giving the guitar a good wipe down with a lint free polishing cloth after playing it every time.

I own a Ec-1k (brilliant guitar, love it) in Vintage Black. I have it since april this year and finish is just as new. And even if it would fade a bit after a while, so what? Then you can see that you really played that guitar. :)
Only problem with my Ec-1k is the poor hardware, as you guys know, its gold. Or should I say was gold... All of my hardware, even the screws in the neckpickup ring and tone and volume pots are starting too rust. I'm almost sure my bridge will be totally rusted befor Christmas this year, and my volume pots (even the tone pot, that I actually never touch...) even befor that... Only my Sperzels look still the way I bought them... I allready went to my local guitar dealer, but he said it was normal and wouldnt get me new hardware...

remember the gothic gibsons why do you think they stopped making them. the finishs would start getting glossy.

It's a bit different from plain clearcoat guitars as even though the satin will turn glossy, they are less prone to being sticky...
Think like those vintage Fender necks that were satin matte like, but have turn very glossy over time...
They still are very smooth and fast necks...

I hope this answers your question. My bandmate owns it (LTD EC-2005) for 1 year.(it started wearing out soon after he bought it though)

Er, I don't think so, at least in the larger scope.
A satin finish goes glossy because it gets worn down from the friction where the body/arms comes in contact with the guitar. Same thing as if you took a REALLY fine sandpaper methood (or even a buffer, or both) to make a satin finish glossy.
it's friction that cause the wear that makes it shine, not oils (although oils could contribute to it).
Seriously, Boog...

the wear on my viper is not that bad... it just looks a little shiney after a while. the only thing that really pisses me off about it is that the neck isnt all silky the way it was when i bought it... but ive have mine for 3 months and there hasnt been much wear. just on the neck. and i abuse the thing for an hour or two a day. dont base a decision on buying a guitar around something as trivial as this. if anything, it makes the guitar look cooler. what you should base your decision on sound and playability.
