hermz

I'll concede it would look better with EMGs, and I did consider going for an 85(b) and 60(n) but I think passives will let me get the most out of the guitar... I will probably try a set of Bare Knuckle Nailbombs in it. Doesn't look like there's enough room to install EMGs even if I wanted to.

I can heartily recommend a Bare Knuckle Ceramic Warpig for the bridge. But there is nothing wrong with Duncans at all.

And thats a wonderful guitar by the way. No Dean comes close. I bet it plays like butter.

I already have two guitars with ceramic Warpigs (best metal pickup in existence). I want to try Nailbombs this time.

Nailbombs are awesome. A backed off Warpig with more mids. I've also heard good things about the Miracle man. I think my next axe will have a Nailbomb, Miracle man or Painkiller in the bridge and a Cold Sweat in the neck.

I put a Sinner in the neck of my '91 Horizon custom and its calibrated with a ceramic Warpig in the bridge but actually has MORE power would you believe? I actually have to dial some volume off. I've never had to do that in my life, never mind for a single coil.
Truly ridiculous.

Nice. I like plenty of mids.

I've thought about trying a Sinner in the neck of my Caparison Dellinger. From everything I've heard they're exactly what I'm looking for in a hot neck pickup.

I've thought about trying a Sinner in the neck of my Caparison Dellinger. From everything I've heard they're exactly what I'm looking for in a hot neck pickup.

They're usually rated at about 16k but Tim matched it with my Warpig so mines overwound to about 23k.
Hot isnt the word. Its wild. On the edge uncontrollable but beautifully articulate at the same time.

I dont know what you've got in the bridge of the Dellinger but a Sinner is a good bet. Or an overwound Trilogy.

hermz
01-07-2008, 06:07 AM
Warpig in the Dellinger, naturally :p

Ravens Creed
01-07-2008, 06:15 AM
Go for the Sinner then, definitely. Its up to you if you want the overwound version (you wont get any volume drop off from the Warpig when you select the neck pup) but I must warn you again, its pretty wild. It screams if you look at it. ;)

Thats only a bonus though, right?

Are Bare Knuckles really that good? I don't really have an opportunity to try them, and I am hesitant to risk not liking them if I were to get some.

But, if I were to take a chance, should I follow the website and go with the Painkiller calibrated set for my metal needs, or something else?

How how would I know which push pull pots to get? The 250 or 500 ones?

Ravens Creed
01-07-2008, 04:19 PM
Bare Knuckles are pretty much the best in my opinion.

As for what sound you're after, well it depends on your guitar and rig and playing style but rest assured they'll have something that will beat the other options quite comfortably.

Painkillers for classic metal with plenty of growl. Nailbombs for Thrash and Punk. Warpigs (ceramic especially) for Thrash and Death. Holy Diver and Cold Sweat for Heavy rock and classic metal (great in neck position). Miracle Man for modern metal. Although there's plenty of overlap in the range and thats just the contemporary humbuckers. They are suprisingly versatile. Heavy as hell but you hear every note and they sound good clean even though they kick your head in with gain.

Although they are voiced for a certain task, they arent as limited as some pups.
For instance, a Miracle Man will give you something akin to an EMG 81 but has far more dynamic range. If you want it beefed up you can ask to overwind it from 17 to 22k and so on.

BK's cost a bit but you cant really go wrong. Just talk to Tim and discuss what you need first. Even though the models are defined he can always tweak them to your needs.

hermz,

Wow! Nice V!

I though ESP wouldn't make a Gibson-style Flying-V shape anymore...

Is it an older custom, or a recent build?

hermz
01-08-2008, 05:03 PM
It was just built... those photos were taken by ESP. I haven't actually received the guitar yet.

As far as I know, if you're outside of the USA or Canada they have no problems building you a traditional Flying V shaped guitar.

I was under the impression that as long as its a one-off and not a standard production guitar you can make any shape you want. Like Rob Flynn's Gibson shape V's made by ESP. I know they are barritones but does that make that much difference?

You were given the wrong impression. Robb's V was made a while ago, and the headstock is also different. From what I understand, ESP won't make him another one either.
