the preamp arrived on thursday, tho i didn't get much chance to play around with it for the first few days; i'm running the preamp into the FX return of my mark III (wanted to give this a try before i started dropping cash on power amps)

at first i wasn't impressed with the unit at all, i thought it sounded pretty thin/weak on it's own, like the sound was trapped in a box or something. so i tried engaging the graphic eq on the boogie, sounded A LOT better that way, and really opened up the sound i was getting. the bad side to this tho was that it sounded a lot like my mark III already did, not exactly but the differences were rather subtle...the point that it really didn't seem worth having the engl pre in there

a day or two later i spent some more time with it, with the graphic eq off. i found that once i turned the presence down a little on the mark III, and turned the power amp up a bit i was getting a much better sound than before; tho i had to raise the presence, and lower the output on the preamp to compensate.

the countour switch for me is what really makes or breaks this unit! it was sounding pretty decent without it, but nothing i was real excited about. with the contour engaged tho it just sounds more alive and is much fuller sounding. there's not much info about to switch other than this from the pdf manual

When the button is pressed, mids between 300 & 500 Hz and mids between 1 & 2 kHz are boosted slightly

anyhow the sound i'm getting sounds a bit different than the normal powerball/fireball tones i was expecting, but for what it is i'm digging it pretty nicely. it's real thick and clear sounding, tho the high end is kinda difficult to dial in (kinda goes from too dark to scratchy, real quick) the dual mid controls work together quite nicely, altho tho upper-mid knob almost acts more as a presence control.

the cleans from the unit are very nice, tho the eq controls don't really do an awful lot. not quite as nice as my mark III or cobra's cleans but definitely better than a lot of cleans i've played, and certainly useable.

i'm still not sure if the preamp is a keeper or not. i was wanting something to use in conjunction with my mark III to get some good low volume recordings, and @ this point i can't say if this fits the bill; i'm gonna spend some time over the next week or so doing some recording and see how that goes.

overall i think it was a solid buy for $400 (used) but i'm just not sure if it's gonna give me what i'm after

pent a few hours messing with this over the last couple days, and i'm really not getting much of anywhere...i'm having a difficult time getting a good sound with enough body and clarity

i tried the e609, sm57, and i5...ended up going with the 57, but i think it's about time to break out the mixer and try a dual mic setup

guitar used was my mv300 with emg 85 bridge, cab was the splawn OS 2x12 with a v30 miked up

btw, the engl is on the left & mesa is on the right...they kinda switch off in the very first part, starting with the engl

Very nice clip. just from the start im feeling the mesa more, it sounds fuller but i think if the engl had a bit more bass it would sound great too. nice job man.

I had an ENGL Savage 120 for years and couldn't get a good tone out of it. I couldn't give it away either until they became 'fashionable.'

The Engl doesn't sound bad. But it doesn't sound great either. I'd be interested to hear it with a different cab/speaker combo.

I like it. It's different to say the least, I dont' think they sound the same.

btw, what did you use to program the drums?

i think it's the power amp that's really the buzzkill, but i can't really afford anything better at the moment (i'm just running it thru the boogie's fx return, with the graphic eq off)

i've tried it all my cabs/speakers and kinda get the same result with all of them

drums were a mixture of dfh2 and some random samples

I was just wondering. I'm not a big V30 fan, so I didn't know how much of a difference that would make.

I play the E 530 slaved into a Marshall head. I dig it a lot, personally. To each their own though. I did have to mess around with the settings a lot. Right now I have the gain on the preamp rolled back to about 4/10, with a Boss Super Overdrive pedal in front (gain and volume halfway, tone almost all the way down).

I personally can't say I dig it... it sounds a bit too... fizzy... scratchy, dunno how to describe it... personally, I like your cobra/mark III recordings a whole lot more...

looks like i'll be selling the preamp soon, i'd like to keep it but i found a deal on a presonus firepod that i couldn't pass up & since i'm not made of money something's gotta go!

usually i get good results recording with v30's, i've got a mesa cab with mc90's i would try as well if i had time

i agree that the cobra/mark III mix sounds better, i think i'm gonna have to work around the volume issues somehow and just go with that...i don't think i'm gonna be satisfied with my recordings anytime soon otherwise

thanks man...i ended up selling the preamp yesterday tho

i wasn't digging it as much as i'd hoped, and i found a sweet deal on a firepod that i didn't wanna miss out on
