View Full Version : 100w tube amps
Hi! First-time-poster here!
This might be a stupid question, but bare with me, I'm a tube-noob :\ I've had the same 30w transistor amp during my 9 years of guitar playing.
I was just wondering how loud a 100w tube amp with a 4X12 is.
Can you comfortably sit next to it in your bedroom and jam all by yourself? Or will your ears start bleeding?
The reason I'm asking is because I haven't had a chance to try one, the nearest music-store is 300 kilometres from where I live, and I really want a great amp that I can use when I'm giggin' with my band.
It would be great If you could recommend me an amp, max. around 1200 dollars.
Thanks in advance!

no, if thats your main use 100watts is overkill, probly even 50watts.
laney are great amps round that price, ive just orderd a GH50L . But im not sure how they are priced in the states, (assuming thats where you are)

My Powerball is 120 watts and it sounds reall good at lower volumes.
Remember that generally watts isn't to measure volume (cause it is), but more of talking about headroom

it would depend on what amp you buy, some you can play at low volumes but you cant get as good of a sound as you would when its turned up.

Get a Vetta II or maybe the Vetta III if that ever comes out...

I see, so a pod would be the best option for me if I want a low-volume good sound?

ofcourse you can sit next to it in your room dude. i have 2 120w amps and i can have them on comfertabley in my room. i supose it depends on the size of your room. obviously you wont get the full potential of the amp at a low volume but you could still use the amp in your room.

+1
the mesa mark series, most engl, and most vht amps sound very nice at low volumes...but get better when you crank them up, so you could use them for a bedroom amp or for large gigs equally well
a lot of bigger tube amps like that don't really sound good unless you've got them kinda loud, which is fine i a band situation but tremendous overkill at home...don't get me wrong you can still use these amps at lower volumes, but they won't sound as good as they should be

of-course they can sound good at lower volumes, but you wouldn't recommend someone who is going to primarily use it for the bedroom a 100-watt half-stack

yeah when I had my dual recto @ my apartment it sucked.
The tone at the volume I can play at and not get evicted sucks, you really need to crank tube amps to higher volumes to get the tone you paid for.
the dual recto shined when it wasn't at the apt, that's for sure :hat

Pod XT live and a $1000 pair of Studio Monitors... there ya go! Actually I do that, sounds so good. And the monitors we also use for mixing and mastersing so. There ya go... 2 birds with one stone. Not to mention you can record like a champ with the XT live... its got brutal tone... check out my band recording, let me know what you think.

Even at moderate volumes my 100watt Krank is not happy, it needs earthshaking levels to really breath. I have gotten the cops called to my house 8 times (they were always cool with me). granted, a few of those times were because of the drummers double bass, and or all of us ripping thru the set. and I live in a house and play in a room with no windows! lol. We had to start playing at a practice space.

if the amp/tone you really want only comes in a 100w head, then why not? when you're talking about high gain amps there aren't really many lower wattage models designed from home use available

Hahaha...LRJ strikes again!
I like my el Diablos for the fact I can switch between 50W and 100W.
