View Full Version : Pickup distance
I have a question since im new here
Whats the difference when the pickup is closer/far away from the string when you tune it.
And whats actualy sustain?
And what cind of wood gives you more or less sustain?

Depends on if your pickup is active/passive
Sustain is how long a string rings if you pick it and leave it ringing

81's, being active, don't make much of a difference. There are differences to raising it, you should get more output and get more of a "chunk", but EMGs only have to be about 1.5mm high, I think? They really don't make a big difference in tone changing the height.
Sustainable woods are generally everything. A guitar built with wood from the top of tree would sustain the most. The tighter the grain, the longer the sustain. There is also other things you can do to make your guitar sustain longer, such as graphite saddles, graphite/bone/brass/etc nut, Alnico pickups (the lower the alnico, the less tense the magnetic pull, the more the string sustains naturally), etc.
nice, i have EMG electronic witch i got with 81 but i was thinking of cahnging it itno something bether do you have any sugestion, i was thinking something like Alexis tuning(but his is to expensive) and i want to cahnge the tuners and i was thinking of GOTOH
