i don't quite enjoy my guitar falling off me while im in the middle of playing something, can anyone recommend some good strap locks?
I read some reviews about schaller strap locks and they sound like they would work well. So I'm thinking of getting a pair of them, but are there any other strap locks that would be better? thanks.

Dimarzio strap locks

dont take my advice, take Jibboom's. we just had a post discussing straps. several others mentioned Dimarzio as well.

I use Shaller and have had no issues. Easy to fit and easy to use, especially with ESP as the screws are the same size. I had real issues fitting them to my Ibenez.

I've used Dunlop locks for about 20 years now. I've used them on 20+ guitars I've never had an issue. The only problem that some may have is the lock actually "locking" up on the strap pin. I use just a bit of dry graphite inside the mechanism and I've never had that problem.

Schallers are the best design imo.

Had a dunlop fail and dumped my brand new les paul to the stage, but not before the top struck the mikestand on the way down. Sent a letter to the company, never got a reply

Have used schaller ever since.

I have and use all 3 (Dimarzio, Schaller and Dunlop). My favorite are honestly the Dunlops, but the short answer is that any straplocks are better than no straplocks.

If your strap button is on the back of the guitar rather than the tip of the horn (V's, BC Rich, Vipers), then go with Dunlop or Dimarzio.

The Dimarzio system works great and the strap is comfortable...as long as you like that kind of strap. Also be careful with the buckle. They'll pinch your fingers if you're not careful. That sounds like a very pansy thing to say but giving youself a blood blister on one of your fingers as you're getting ready to play a gig fucking sucks.

one thing you need to realize...every strap lock system has a chance of failure, none of them are guaranteed

that being said i use dunlops, but i've used schallers in the past with no issues

i've used this method to weed out good companies from bad many times, infact the first time i did it i was just 9yrs old, to great success (aurora model-kit company ) , after being told to give this a try by my Dad.

i had a seymour duncan 50th anniv set and 1 of the 2 pups was defective,
i sent it to SD with a short letter asking if they'd fix or replace,
they sent me a replacement. awesome!

had a defective furman PM8DM, send it to company asking if they'd fix or replace, i don't know if they fixed original or replaced and that's moot, i know i got a working unit back. awesome!

now not every company replies to emails,
emails get lost,
mis-directed,
deleted,
etc.,
so i don't judge a company on that.
but taking the time to write (print ) and mail a letter, any company worth its salt will reply IMO.

as for straplocks, i much prefer schallers.

the only thing to note is gibson uses an oversized screw only n the bottom of a guitar,
so i have to fill in the hole with wood putty, wood glue, toothpick or a couple of 'em, and then use the schaller NORMAL-SIZE screw. and results are great.

I changed my Historic Collection Custom Les Paul from Stock to Schallers without an issue or use of Wood fillers.

Weird that everyone loves Schallers so much... I have a set and they pop off all the time! If you have like a thick Levy's strap, don't use Schallers. Since you have to screw the end on, a thicker strap will make it so that the screw can't be screwed on as tightly, which is why it pops off so much. Should be okay with some thin nylon strap though.

Can someone explain how the Dunlops work and why there are like, four different types on the site? I've been meaning to get some, but I'm kind of confused from the guy that said his Les Paul fell off with the Dunlops.

Gaij you are a brave man sending gear to any company and expecting it back, even if it’s a 90% chance you will because the company does good business... I think that’s just America though because you have more rights as a consumer. If it were English electronics companies chances are id never see my piece of kit again if I sent it off with a nice polite letter. We have less consumer rights and a general lack of good customer service anyway. But it’s nice to hear of good stories; it puts my faith back in humanity in general and I like to hear about these things.. hence my pointless reply here :p

im gonna go ahead and say dont listen to that.

im using a levy's m7gg3 and put the straplocks (schaller) on 1 time and have never had a problem.

I think user error is 99% of the problem. Maybe you should try tightening down the nut, checking it after you do so every few days make sure it hasn't loosened. I tightened mine 1 time, the first time they went on, and its been fine for over a year with daily usage.:)

i just recently purchased some Zeppelinn strap locks and i think they're solid. a little bit more expensive than schaller. i use both and they both work well. but i think the Zeppelinns look nicer and a little easier to put on and take off the guitar.

oh, and they are definately easier to install than schaller, especially if you have a thick strap! Schaller can be tough to install on a thick strap.

Just speaking from experience, it's possible that I got a bad set. I know I screw em on tight, though!

Yeah, some straps you have to make the hole in the leather a bit bigger in diameter (not much more) in order to use schallers.

The only thing that holds the dunlops in place are tiny ball bearings that poke out of the sides of the strap pin that fits into the female end of the lock. if the little bearings get dirty and jam, they will fail. Nothing will stop your guitar from falling except your ninja like reflexes.

At least schallers guitar end of the lock are held in a cradle in the body of the strapside of the lock and won't fall unless your nut on the strap is really loose which will allow the cradle to rotate upside down. Before the mechanism fails, it gets really stiff and grindy, and will begin to squeak. Time to replace them. Don't oil them to quiet them. it won't appreciably extend the lifespan.

How do shallers just pop off? if you put them on right the only way they can come off is if you take them off

put them on so that the little U shaped piece cradles the peice on the guitar if that makes sense

It's the strap coming off of the attachment, not the lock from the guitar.

i guess people dont tighten the nut enough and i guess they have problems from it. I mean even though i havent had a problem in over a year i still do a quick visual check before i use it.

Also do the cradle thing, and tighten the nut down.

Schallers are the best strap locks in my opinion. They have a lip that catches the strap pin as a fail safe unlike the dunlops. I have been using them for a while now and I have thrashed my guitar around without ever having issues.
