I'll teabag you old man.
I use an ART 15 band EQ for my Mark III. It was the best $90 I spent on that amp so far.

Will do, soon. Looks a wee bit ridiculous right now on top of a Marshall JCM 800 with encyclopedia's in between them. :lol But I'll snap a picture or two anyway. I've got #1373. I either run it through one half of a Randall XL cab in 8 ohms, or through that along with a Carvin Legacy cab in 16 ohms each. They both have Vintage 30's and G12T-75's in the X pattern.
The main reason I need an eq for extra tweaking is because using a boost in front of the amp has not been entirely successful. It does add extra crunch and power, but it also adds feedback at the end of every riff or run. The amp does not sound happy with that. Perhaps when I put some extra noise reduction in the loop that will help. Right now I just run a Boss GT-8 in front of the amp for a noise gate and an effect here or there.

You could put a DBX comp/gate in front of the Mark V to help with feedback.

If you run the GT-8 with the four cable method and using the EQ and gate that way you could run one of the boss's od's or the od you have...
Sounds like getting a noise gate/supressor would help with the feedback more than a Graphic EQ...

Might sound crazy but yes, an extra eq would be very helpful. Something with more frequency options than the graphic on there. I would still be using that as well.

Before I tried the GT-8 I would always run the Noise Supressor and Super Overdrive pedals together. The NS-2 would be maxed and SD-1 at half on volume and gain. With the GT-8 I tried some milder boosts, with the same results. The feedback always takes a little too long to be cut off.

Both great pedals. What else do you use in the loop?
One of the main reasons why I switched from pedals back to the GT-8 was because when I use pedals I get what sounds like a ground hum. It disappears when I unplug the pedal power. Nothing wrong with the pedals or power supplies. I've got the Dunlop DC-Brick, and borrowed a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2+, each hum through the amps.

i would have thought mesa we're capable of engineering the Mk5 to sound good by anyones standards purely stand alone.

Screw the pedal EQs and get a rack EQ. Here's a pic of mine, it just sits on top of the amp.

Well, it does get really close by itself. But needs to be quite loud to get the gain saturation. Definitely sounds best in 90 watt mode.

I will be getting a noise gate soon. I need it pretty bad at higher volumes.

Come on down. Looks like it would be a long drive for you.
Some people that visit do not want to leave. We've had to run off a few free-loading bums lately. You're right about it being cool in there. It's insulated much better than the house. We were hoping that would soundproof it a little, but not much luck there.
how much did the mark v run you?
$2000 for the head. It's the same price just about everywhere.
Very good price for a tube head that has all of those features.

How are you liking it? Have you owned or played any of the other Marks before to compare?

I'm liking the hell out of it. A friend was over earlier in the week to try it out and now he wants to record with it on his upcoming cd.
Nope, haven't played any Marks before this one. I've heard some Recto's played in person, that's about it as far as Boogie goes. Kinda glad that I'm not too familiar with the original Marks because some people tend to go nuts comparing them. This thing is its own beast. Still fiddling with the controls every time I play it. Over the last couple of nights I've gotten a better sound out of the graphic eq.
At this point I plan to buy a Rocktron Hush noise reducer and an Art 15-band eq. Both are dual units, which will let me use them with the Marshall as well. That one would really benefit from an eq. The way things are going though, it looks like it'll be next year before I can start buying stuff again.

perhaps try using that before you buy another eq??? ;)

See the above post. I do use the built-in eq, every time I play the amp. That night the pictures were taken I did not have it on 'set and forget'. Everything has changed again since then. It also looks like I was using the Preset eq instead of the sliders at that time. That eq on the amp adds a lot, and does so much that I would never play through the amp without it. One in the loop would be for fine-tuning purposes, things that the amp's eq could never do alone. Plus I could use a new one on the Marshall head at the same time and make that amp a bit heavier.
Kinda glad that I'm not too familiar with the original Marks because some people tend to go nuts comparing them.
That's preposterous.
