I'm currently sporting an Edwards E-FR-145GT Quilted Maple. It's got a 9 piece hard maple/walnut neck,(2/3 maple), ebony fingerboard, alder body and a quilted maple top. It's got the standard Seymour Duncan JB/59 combo, but the 59' is a little too muddy for my taste, and the JB just ain't me. I play it through a Mesa Boogie 50 solo head, which in turn runs through a Hughes & Kettner Warp 7 cab. I'm looking for a clear, yet warm mic, with lots of midst for the neck pos, and a hot and tight, yet sparkly neck pickup. I play a lot of power metal and 80s rock, and Steve Vai style soloing, so i want my neck pikcup to be kinda fat and tight, but still being able to open up to get a hairier sound. I thought about an Air Norton for the neck and a Super 3 for the neck, but i'm a little scared of it being a rather noisy, having 25k DC resistance and all. Any help'll be apprecieted:)

Well the standard is a Shure SM57, but if thats not your cup of tea, there is another mic that is being used a lot to mic guitar cabs. Its Sennheiser e609. Ive never had time with both of these mics to really try them out. So just maybe try those and see how they work.

What do you mean noisy?
I don't have experience with either, but I had a Super Distortion (Super 1, I guess you could call it) in my guitar and I thought was a pretty good pickup. Not noisy at all in the sense of it having like hiss or hum. I swapped it out and now I have an EMG 85 in there. I have some wiring issues with mine, but tone-wise, I like it quite a bit.

I thought about mics for the axe, not for the cab:) Rex: the JB's tend to get a little noisy from time to time, might be a wiring thing, but i'm out to change it anyways, it doesn't have the right punch for me. Doesn't have enough buttom, but i don't want the pup to be to rounded off either, so i don't know.

If you are ok with actives: 85 in bridge and 60 or 85 in neck.

Nah, i'm not too fond of actives.

I'm not too fond of the JB either, but I don't think it's particularly noisy. At least not the ones I've tried...
But yeah, if you want something with more low-end... hmm... like I said, I can't really comment on the Super 3, but I'm sure the Super D has quite more low-end (and low-mids) than the JB.

JB can be great if you put it in the right guitar ;)

As for the mics:
Shure SM-57 - classic, pronunciation of the upper mids, aggressive character; can be a bitch to set up though
Sennheiser E906 - also good for guitar, flatter response
Sennheiser MD421 - great big round sound, less aggressive but fuller

The JB isn't very noisy, just from time to time, like I said, it might be a wiring problem or the tubed in the amp, but it don't suit me very well anyhow. But i don't want lots of lows, and lo mids, but a richer, fuller tone, even with a high gain amp.

The JB isn't my first priority to swap out, but rather the 59'. I need a pickup witt lots and lots of upper mids and chopped off treble, not high power. I want it to sing!
