Is it ok to keep guitars/amps/drums in a garage full time? I don't think there will be a problem with moisture because it's under my apt and the ceiling is sheet rock(no mold). Its never musty or anything. The walls are cinder block and two have dirt on the outside from being set in the ground and the floor is cement.
If there is a moisture problem is there something I can get to control it? Does anyone else keep their gear in a basement or garage??
I'm just wondering because I have a somewhat large collection of guitars/basses/amps and a drumset and its taking up a lot of space. There's not really anything in the garage so...
And I'm not selling off any of it because I use all of it and it took me a while to build this collection up.
Thanks for posting.:eek::eek:

I would think its fine as long as the temperature and humidity does not vary wildly throughout the day. I can't see it being good for the gear to get heated up and cooled down every day. So if its 50 at night and 110 during the day, that's gonna be a problem.

Yeah It doesn't chance that wildly. In the summer it'll be 80-90 in the day and 50-60 at like 3 in the morning. The winter is what I was kinda wondering about too. It'll be 10-20 at night and 30-40 in the day.

Here is an old picture of some of my guitars. This is about 3-4 years ago. Since then I sold 4 of the strat bodied's and at least doubled what's here(including basses). I also got some ESP's since this pic. I'll take an updated picture when I get a new camera

No That's not mine. I have more explorers and stuff than that guy. Never really liked strat styled. More for the metal looking axes. And I think he has more than me. I only have 46 he must have at least a hundred.

Kramer V FTW!

I wouldn't store my gear if the temp dropped that low. If you need to keep them nice and warm let me know,I'd be more then willing to help out.

Amps will be fine unless they're particularly sensitive vintage pieces. I'd keep the guitars inside, though.

I don't know what your garage looks like exactly or what neighborhood you live in, but aren't you afraid of burglars? Breaking into a garage seems easier to me than breaking into a house.

In case of humidity: Cases for guitars and basses should ensure their wellbeing. If the room is not open (i.e. has windows etc) you can also use a passive dehumidifier, it's like a little box that simply collects water from the air in the room. You can get them quite cheap at home depots etc, usually for use in moist basements. We had one in our old rehearsal room and it worked just fine.

Yeah I'll look into a dehumidifier. It's not that bad down there considering the sheetrock is not moldy. And it doesn't get to cold either because it's below the house and the duct work runs on the ceiling. I'm not worried about burglars because there are no windows. only a garage door, which I rarely open, and stairs leading up to a door leading into the house. Both have locks. It's a very nice neighborhood. Most people who have garages have pool tables and big screens down there and have the doors always open. It's like they want people to know the have a lot of nice crap.

i would not keep guitars in a garage,

i had my guitars all on hangers on walls and a friend suggested i put the cases (taking space in closets ) in the garage, i did that and had no issues; but note the cases would get a lot of humidity so i never put a gutiar in a case right away, i'd let the case sit open for a day in the house if i needed to haul the guitar somewhere.

i've put electronics/rack gear, pedals, cabinets, in a storage facility and had no problems. i was paranoid to put my amp heads in there but i suspect they'd have been fine too.

basically my thought is:
- no guitar/instrument in any environment unlike a house
- electronics, cabs, cases, can go in a garage/storage as long as they aren't something rare , irreplaceable, etc. that i simply wouldn't take the risk with.
a good example is i own a bog uberschall i'd bought years ago at a good price new, that i could never afford to replace ever EVER at any price i could afford going forward, therefore i've babied that mofo.
