So what do you guys think would be a better set up here, an ADA MP-1 with a VHT 2/50/2 or an ENGL e-530 with a peavey 50/50? or i could save up for longer and get an ENGL with the VHT, but i really dont know which ones sound better. i am a total noob on this rack stuff and what im saying might make no sense at all but listening to clips lately i REALLY like the sound of preamps + power amps more than heads.
i will ignore bullshit, i just need help cuz im a rack noob.

I think the VHT, (VHT makes killer shit) and the ENGL E 530 would be great if you can afford it. Have you tried an E 350?

no man i haven't played either of them, i just wanted to see your guys's opinions on them. and the tone im looking for would be kind of Black Dahlia murder during Unhallowed. i want a good amount of gain but for the notes to be clear and not muddy.

I have the E530, and all I can say that it's the best preamp you can possibly get for the price(new that is).
Super br00tz distortion, great cleans and good blues/rock tones. The knobs are really sensitive to
change so it's definitely tweakers amp.

I haven't tried them out in person, but I did hear the two together, and it sounded kinda like a 6505 to my ear. Very metal sounding. Im not to familiar with Black Dahlia Murder's music, but if they got a 6505 tone goin' on, then the E 350 with the VHT is perfect for you:)

tone on the new album is AWESOME!
I had an ADA MP-1 going through a Mesa 50/50. At first I thought it was pretty meh cause from what I read, everyone hyped it up as a staple of metal preamps. Then I did the 3.666 mod and it sounded way better. But it was still lacking something that I just couldn't put my finger on. I think my main beef with it was that between the settings, the jumps were huge. Like, the presence would be not enough or too much, no in between setting. But Monty as a 3TM which I hear are killer so PM him.

Well i just found a 5150 block letter for $450 so if i can get that before anyone else i think i might give up on the whole preamp poweramp thing. thanks for the replys though guys it'll really help me out in the future because im still wanting to build myself a rack.

I also have a MP1 3TM and love it. I run it though a 2/100 Mesa recto and 2 Mesa cabs, wouldn't change my setup for anything else.

preamp came today, not sure what to think so far
tried it thru my mark III fx return which has served me well in the past
initial impression...it was kinda thin/weak sounding honestly and i wasn't into it much, when i engaged the mark III graphic EQ i was able to get a MUCH better tone from it which i enjoyed quite a bit
the downside was that the sound wasn't too different from the sound i already get with my mark III...i'll have to spend some more time, but it looks like there may be some engl spam in my future :(

you'll probably get a sound you like out of it because it seems like most people say they do.

i like what i'm getting so far, it's just that i don't really have the cash to drop on a dedicated power amp right now...and running it thru my mark III power section sounds quite a bit like my mark III, to the point i don't know if it's worth having it around
but we'll see
