My friend wanted to install LEDs for his Peavey(he removed the front panel and would like the leds like the all other cool guys have). If anyone has ideas how to install them(where to connect, how and what to use), then ideas would be welcome.
Btw, I enjoy my stock dual recto and I´m glad. :hat

the stock leds have a specific shape to them.. not the easiest to find in my experience.... what other led's are you speaking of?

Not the stock leds. He wanted to make a LED array of leds inside the amp - just to show it shining.

Could you not wire the LED's and shape them to whatever pattern is wanted perhaps 5150 in blue to replace the logo..

I know you can buy pcb's to stick led's and stuff on, and im sure i've seen plenty of guys have extra leds powered by the amp allthough you could wire it to batteries,a dn have an on off switch too...

I will look for anything that might give you a more detailed guide of how to do it, I gues your taking the grill off and replacing it with a ventilated or nearly clear one...

have you checked youtube for guides?

Jep, like this. Just one question, where did you get the power? From the speaker output or transformer, or where?
Checked youtube.

hey fag who's hating on the 5150, listen to forum member losing reality's clips. if THAT sounds shitty to you, then you either are deaf, or just fucking retarded.

Uh, yeah but... I'm not the one trying to figure out a way to light up the tubes in my amp.

I think I have heard of people using the amps power to power up the amp lighting, however you could use an alternate powersource like a battery with a switch, shouldnt be too difficult to geta pcb to wire up the led's, and then make a small battery/switch holder...

The best way you could get power from the amp is to find a small voltage tap from the PT, stick a 1:1 transformer (rated for whatever voltage that the tape your getting power from is rated at) in parallel to that circuit, should be a 12v tap from the main PT. Then you would take the - end of the transformer, hook up a resistor connect it and then connect up your LEDs back to back. I would suggest though that you wire the LEDs in series with each other. Your safe bet is that if you go off a 12v tap, you could get by with no using a voltage regulator and just a resistor.

However the amount of LEDs you could use for that tap would be determined by the color you want to use nad the resistance required. You would have to specify the color and how many you want so I could give you the right rating for your resistor.

at 12v to connect up 2 blue LED's you could need a 150 ohm resistor and 4 LED's for green, yello and red.

You would have to pull the amp apart and find which power tap is the lowest voltage, should be 12v for the footswitch and automation controls, like the other LED's and stuff. If the voltage is more than that, you would use a voltage regulator connected in parallel to the two taps of the transformers. However I would say that if you get a 24v tap fromt he main PT, you could just wire up 4 blue LEDs with the same 150 ohm resistor or 8 of the other ones. Or you could even use a 2:1 tranformer from a 12v tap and get 24v out, all depends on what you want to do.

on a side note you could hook up a switch before the resistor so you can turn them off and on when the amp is on

I know that might seem like a lot, so if you could tell me how many LEDs you plan on using and what the voltage ratings for the PT taps are, I could figure it all out for you and draw up a little diagram on how to hook it up. If you pull the amp out of the chasis and look where the PT connects to the PCB, there will be handwriteen voltages for each tap, I do beleive my 5150 said 12v, I think it was the purple wire, but check it out

Other option, get a 9v battery and hook up the LED's straight to it without resistors, however, when the battery is done for, you loose your lights, where if you get the tap form the amp, the lights will always light up when the amp is powered on

On a side note I forgot to mention that messing around with the amps internals is dangerous and it needs to have the lethal charge bleed properly...

Which is why i'd advocate a simpler safer 9v led curcuit with switch...

you know what is really cool is that the 5150 has leak resistors on them, they say that you should wait a few minutes, but I have actaully tested and found no voltage anywhere near the power amp section and also the filter caps, so they are pretty safe to work on. The section that you would work on to do the mod would be out of the way from the high voltages, you might see 30v to -70v (possible, but with resistors much less) at the most. YOu would be dealing with the power amp area which is completely safe since it has no high voltage caps in the circuit.

but yes the 9v battery mod would be much easier for beginners
