what amp would be good for a death metal guitarist? Right now I am using a crate DXJ112 and it's got great clean tone but the distortion is not very good.

You can't go wrong with a 5150/6505

The ENGL Fireball is also an excellent choice for death metal

Engl fireballs are awesome... just not my thing... speaking of which the one that just collects dust at my house needs to go... I'll end up sticking it on ebay this week or selling it on craigslist. I'm more of a savage/blackmore fan.

Never gigged - jammed on for maybe 2 months...

Gotta go

5150 is the way to go IMO, failing that the Laney GH heads are killer

Speaking of 5150's, where did they go? Did they get discontinued? What the hell is going on!?

5150 is owned by Eddie, so once EVH left Peavey, they had to change the name of the amp to 6505. It's the exact same amp.

Are you serious? Hahahaha. I feel so dumb, every time I talked about the two, I would say the 6505 is better because of sound clips on youtube I heard. Wow. That's crazy. But wasn't the 5150 like 900 dollars? The 6505 cost more.

900 some bucks when I got mine. That was in the early 90s...

So really they've become less expensive

I got the wild idea to give the fireball another shot with some better tubes in it. Way more midrange growl...

jj tubes... 12ax7 high gain tungsol gold and a balanced high gain in the preamp...

460 on the plate and biased to 32.5ma.....

This thing will cut through walls now...

I think it may just be a keeper yet...

They're like 1000 dollars now at MF.com and all those places if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah but I made 13 bucks an hour in 95-99 and until I got laid off I make like 29.
for 1000 in the 90s is like 13-1600 now...

Seriously I remember when USA Jacksons were 1200-1400...

Haha. Dude I'm making like 30 dollars a day, I work for that texting service "kgb_" because I'm not old enough for a decent job. So anything over 500 is about 2000 to me.

I have some really really nice gear... But I've lived off of beer and popcorn to own most of it. 29 sounds great and all but after uncle sam, health insurance, 401k, pension, rent, renter's insurance, utilities.... ect ect....

It's really not that great. Besides you live as close to your means as possible...

Life is always transitional...

Yeah I know. And with this economy it's getting even harder to make good money, or money in general. I'm not complaining though, I have all I need to make music, so I'm good for awhile.

Ya, he has it right. That's why Fender was able to market they're EVH amp as the 5150III when he went to them.

6505 costs more now because every thing costs more now. The ONLY difference between a 6505 and 5150 stock and brand new are the tubes that come in them.

Oh I see. I guess that was the difference in sound. I'm shocked though, I had no idea.

xD. I've never paid attention to Peaveys until I got one. I knew about them, but when shopping for amps, I would always skip past them, don't know why. I SWEAR I saw them for sale like 2 weeks ago!
