Anybody have any experience with this?
Getting sick of my Flextone XL and was wondering if this would be a step up?
I play mostly metal BTW

I honestly don't think it would be a huge step up.

What don't you like about your flextone?

nothing in particular...have always had GAS for a stack and found this one cheap thats all......I guess Ill just hold off until ive saved enough for a tube amp and decent cab.

The AVT's are decent, IMO, but so are the Flextones.

You have a Flextone III? or II?

Flextone III XL
i run guitar=>RP500=>effects loop so I dont use any of the flextones amp/cab modelling and use the ones in the RP instead.....not sure which has the better modelling (amp or RP) cause I havent really bothered comparing them...but what I know for sure is that I get much better tone running through the effects loop and bypassing the flextones pre-amp

I have a AVT50H head through a 2 X 12 cab. I love it. I think it buries the Flextones. Simple to use, Clean channel, dirty channel, reverb. I put a sonic stomp box in the loop and that really opened things up. I'm in the market for better speakers or a 4 X 12 cab.

I had an AVT150 Head for 3 months. It was OK. The Acoustic Simulator was PHENOMENAL! However, the gain was pretty tame. I also have an AVT50 combo, and ironically, that pushed a lot harder than the head. The Effects were pretty useless too.
Save up for a used Tube amp, I think when I got my AVT150 Head I paid like $700 for it, you can get a decent used Tube amp for that used(like maybe a Peavey 5150, 6505), and I think you'll be more happier with that than the AVT

how does that sound compared to putting it in the front?

It doesent sound like a step up imo i've played some of the avt's and while they sound ok you can do better for the money, I dont know if the newer ones are better, it possibly wont really get that metal tone they have nice cleans and mild overdrives but imo they dontreally do modern metal that well...

It seems a little fuller in the loop. I don't know any other way to describe.
I put my Metal Muff distortion and YJM308OD in front
and only play on the clean channel. The combo of the Metal Muff and
Sonic Stomp really work well. Probably make any amp sound good.

I would stay away from the Avt, played one before and had no balls at all sounded weak. I would say think the Flextone would be better, but its all personal taste.

I own the AVT150H with a full stack. Had a half stack at one point too. I do not recommend Marshall in general. Sure, you get the older-school rock sound, not so much of the new metal crunch. PM me for pictures.
