Does anyone have a Marshall AVT150H. Until I can go to try one, I would like some opinions on it.

Had one it was ok. cleans were pretty good but for some reason mine got distorted when i played hard. Distortion is just your standard Valstate distortion. Overall it was a meh for me. Marshalls are very cheaply built amps even the JVM was crap from the shitty build quality to the shit plastic pots. bought it and returned it the same day. Mesas the way to go for all tube amps but its an ok amp overall nothing that really stands out except for the effects

Awesome. I've already heard some bad things about the Valvestate, so i'm not going to bother with it. Its either a Spider III, a Mesa, or a Peavey of some sort.

what are you playing through right now and what sound are you looking for?

Im playing through a piece of shit Behringer that i've had for too long now. Im kinda looking for Death tone. If you listen to Chuck Schuldiner's sound, he had that high gain sound with a little bit of mids dialed in, and a very tight bass response. My budget is about $800 and below for a head. Ebay is lookin good for me.

I'm very familiar with them... the guitarrist in my first band had a 100 watt combo, the guitarrist from a buddy's band has the head... pretty decent all-around amps, but WAY overpriced...

for that kind of money, you might as well get a new Flextone, a Spider Valve or even a used Peavey 5150 or Randall T2...

Mesas the way to go for all tube amps

This statement renders the value of your opinions null and void from here on after.

If i buy a tube amp, I want something with EL34's, or something that can switch between 6L6's and EL34's. This is why I like the JSX.

Don't worry, Kutje just loves his Marshall amps... ;)

My main amp is not a Marshall, remember? I simply hate categorical statements.

What if I like Marshall tone? How would Mesa be "the way to go" for me?

If you have the option to go for a Mesa, do it! You cannot and WILL not be disappointed! ;)

Good point...

But everyone has their own opinion on what makes a good tone...

Meh, hence why I prefer to ask what the poster wants out of whichever amps that suits him best...

Unless he doesn't dig Mesa tone, which doesn't make the amps bad, just not his thing. You people should allow for that possibility.

I've tried A Dual Rectifier, and it wasn't my thing. They're not bad...they just don't have the specs that i prefer, which I commented on above.

This is the internet, it is a given that all information from individual hobbyists in internet boards is coloured subjectively. He should know that. If he wants objective information he'd better look out for a good, trustable guitar store in his neighbourhood.

So your after Chuck Schuldiners Tone huh? Well, you've made one mistake already...........

1# Chuck Schuldiner did not play the crappy AVT's and whatnot that Marshall bring out today.

Chuck played the Valvestate 1st series amps, it only had two channels, but man when you crank the contour of it it's like nothing you've heard before. You can Identify a first series Valvestae by looking at the Valvestate logo which should be clear in block letters, and the originals had model numbers starting with "80.." Like this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MARSHALL-VALVESTATE-100W-HEAD-100V-MODEL-8100_W0QQitemZ320156769212QQihZ011QQcategoryZ10171 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have the combo version of the amp, and I well reccomend it if you can find one.

I had the 8100 once, pretty good tone and yes its what chuck used. You can get more gain out of it by closing the fx loop with a cable and pushing the decible button. And if you really want his tone get a dimarzio X2N. Also if you get it from ebay, change the preamp tube::cool:

for under $800 you can't go wrong with a used 5150.

If you really have a hard on for the Death sound, then try and get an early valvestate.

I just think the 5150 is a better amp for the money.

Do you think the early Valvestates are worth the money, or is that a backup in the photo?

That was my Marshall 8200 Valvestate Bi-Chorus. That thing served me well for over 5 years. Sounded great, and never failed me. The clean channel especially was awesome. I still miss it for that.
