I've always really liked Ampeg, but I recently tried a Hartke and really liked it. Anyone use a particular brand?

I'm an Ampeg whore myself. I haven't really played an Ampeg amp that I didn't like.
I'm really interested in Mesa Boogie stuff, tho. I've heard nothing but good things about them.
My least favorite amps, on the other hand, have definitely got to be Peaveys. For their low-end amps to their higher end, I guess it's just their voicing, but they all seem to have that dark top-end and nasty midrange. Just my opinion

Anyone ever try those Line 6 bass amps ? I wonder if they're any good

I really like my Gallien-Krueger. I have the 400RBMkIV. I may upgrade to get more power one day, and it will certainly be another GK. Not everyone likes them, though.

It all comes down to two things:
1) What you are looking for.
2) Your budget.
I have a Laney RB7, and I love it. For an SS, it's got huge tone, great punch, and can really put its sound out. Plus, it was pretty cheap. Going to be getting a 4x10" cab to go with it for more volume. :D

Not sure about their amps, but the bass podxt pro is nice.
They do have the 750 watt lowdown rackmount now, I would like to hear it.

I've tried the regular Bass POD XT. I love it. Simply put, I think that in its price-range, it's one of the best-sounding pre-amps you can find. Probably the most versatile too.
I haven't tried the LowDowns, but for me, I think I would have the same rant as with all Line 6 amps except the Vetta. Needs more stomp models!

i cannot do digital for bass ever again, the time to convert a to d, process it, then convert d to a, causes a perceptible delay that irritates the crap out of me.
i wasn't as annoyed by this with guitar digital processors, and i'm not sure why,
but maybe it's that i need bass and percussion to be really spot-on in timing;
when i tap those bass strings with my finger i need to hear and feel that sound right then.
the sound quality of the bass pod xt was killer; but the delay was too much for me to continue using it.
jme
amp - i don't use a bass amp, just a preamp then into the PA. again jme/o

My ex's dad has a Mesa bass head with matching 4x12 cab and it was amazing. It's second to Ampeg in my opinion. I can't seem to find anything that tops them.

I watched a guy doing some slap bass on a Lowdown at GC a few weeks back.
Plenty of low end, good top end, plenty of perceivable headroom.

fender bassman. /thread
what? It will work..
there's a reason it's call a bassman.
I'm talking about the old 4x10 tweed combos.
Seriously though.. all you need is plenty of clean power & a decent eq. for those few requirements an Acoustic, Hartke, Ampeg, or anything above @ 50 watts will do because you can always mic it or go DI. But more power is always better whether its solid state, digital, tube, or a combination thereof.

You usually need four times as much power (I remember reading that somewhere) for bass amps than you need for guitars.
I don't know... 4 sounds like a lot, but my 100-watt Ampeg struggles to cut thru at band practice I don't even midscoop all that much.

Back when I was playing bass I fell in love with my Peavey Combo 115. I know people are not to fond of Peavey's equipment but I actually recommend this amp. It comes with 2 sets of EQ's, a speaker protection system thingie, pre gain and post gain, and a bunch of other stuff.
For being a single 15 it was punchy as all hell and would shake walls if you went past 2. Also never had a problem cutting through the mix with it. When I start buying bass equipment again I'm getting another one.

I played a Peavey 4x10" combo at a gig once. One of the nicest amps I've played.

I seen a band the other night that had the best live bass tone I think I've ever heard, they were running an Orange bass head, I think it was an AD-200B, through an ampeg cab.
Fucking amazing.
