i have a problem with one of my guitars that has a floyd rose on it (original). I can't pull too much out of whammy bar because the tremolo block gets stuck against the body too soon. I get like 1.5 tone up out of my whammy bar pull, but can't get more. I also have Edwards Alexi guitar, and i don't have this kind of problem on it. Is there anything i can do to fix it? Maybe there are some kind of shims out there that would allow me to place the block a little further so it doesnt get stuck too soon?

do you have an original floyd or licensed, it seems that guitars with OFRs have a little more room , but for example my Ibanez with a LO-TRS trem on it, i actually set the bridge so its pointing up(diving) a little bit which i know is not recommened, but it barely affacts the string height and i can go up about 3 steps or so

i have the original floyd rose (german) and i run into this problem. I really don't know what to do, it sucks. on of my friends have the same problem, but for him he got this problem after he replaced the jackson lo pro with OFR. Mine was like that from the beginning, because the guitar came with OFR. That's why I am selling my guitar. I could do the same thing as you. i will think. thanks for the idea.

OFRs are like that, they seem to not bend up as much...
Same goes for the Edge trem...
The Schaller LFRs however, I find they go way beyond that 1.5 tone point, till you probably break strings... :p
You could change the trem block so that it's thinner, but you could lose tone, but it's subjective really...

Look and see exactly what is hitting what. It could be the edge of the spring block, or even the assembly where the bar threads in (that is what hits on my MII) or even the back of the base plate hitting the bottom of the recessed route on the face of the guitar. Once you see what is hitting, you could look in to routing more wood away. Or in the case of the last example, and you don't want to route the recess any deeper, shim the neck (if it is a bolt-on) and raise the height of the bridge, etc.

i think it depends which string and which gauge you have on, i had no trouble back in the day taking a 8-38 gauge set in standard, and taking the thick e all the way to 5 steps up to a.

i have exactly same strings on both guitars and one can pull 3, the other couldn't. the floyd systems are both the same - both saying made in germany on it and both having the same trem block parameters (i measured). I think the problem is in the way the floyd was installed - it appears "too close" unlike on the other guitar which performs to my expectations - there is about 3 mm difference or so, but it makes a lot of difference for pulls.

hmm, bad routing positioning then, makes the block too close to the body. so when you start pulling up, it just hits the body. i see, you can either live with it or maybe get a tech/luthier to reroute the holes to allow for more space to pull up.

thanks for the idea. i probably gonna find out about this. how do they reroute it? do they put a piece of wood there and make a new hole?

just one quesiton, when you mean too close, do you mean the bridge is too close to the bridge pup or the are you talking about underneath?
