I have swapped pickups in nearly all of my guitars and some customers guitars (only a few). I'm not normally great at these kind of things but it's not difficult!

i have done it in my mirage. its pretty easy. if you are doing EMG's its mindless. just a few solder joints and some screws...

It's actually extremely easy if you have used a soldering iron before, even then it will be easy if you pay attention to the way everything is wired up and have good schematics, though you solders joints may be a little sloppy at first. I fucked my epi SG for over a year because i put the wires to the jock on the wrong prongs.

I was going to put an EMG81 in my V-350 myself then realized the wires were too short (controls were in the bottom wing, the jack was in the top wing) and my soldering gun's knackered.

So I'm taking it to my local tech who should have it does in a couple of days for a minimal fee (including set-up and restring)

Shreddy, I used to have a lespaul and i took out the stock gibby pups and replaced with dimarzios, well the lead wire was too short from the neck to input jack so i improvised and did a complete hack job. Sometimes youre best to take to a tech. Good luck with the V.

I've taken some stuff to him before he's a good guy and knows what he's doing.

It's something he does on the side, He's got another job (so it's not like he needs to charge alot).

You know DIY feels great but then again making the decision to to take it to someone who can do the job you thought you could do is very wise instead of getting agrrevated and into a frenzy of "excepting no defeat" will cause mass damage...

Gotta learn sometime. I've melted pots, shielding jackets, and have allowed for NO signal to come out of my guitar, simply by rewiring the damn thing. But, for all the frustration, I have practiced more and learned how to do it properly. Just takes time.

Thanks jet66. I'm new to soldering myself and what you posted really helps.

No problem. I was hoping to find something dealing with larger surfaces, like the backs of pots and trem spring claws, but no such luck. Those types of joints take a bit more patience and practice, as you have to get the surface very hot to get a good bond, but without it being too hot and damaging electronics. (like with a pot.)

Here is another pretty good description of how to change pickups.
