What is the best way to clean gold guitar hardware? Or what is the best product?
It appears that the gold on my bridge is not coming off but the top coat of gold starting coming off and it appears to look shinier. Is that bad?

In my experience, I have found the best way to clean gold hardware is to replace it with black.

Gold hardware WILL pit and dull and flake, there really isnt much you do to prevent it.
Rosignolo finisher is the best stuff I have ever seen for cleaning hardware, and it works great on Gold....

Unfortunately, it's not entirely inaccurate. Gold hardware is a pain in the ass because of the varieties of hardware color out there - nickel, chrome, gold, black, cosmo, etc...) gold is the thinnest plating of them all. In some extreme cases, just rubbing the polishing rag over them is enough to take off some...lol (That's the really cheap stuff...but it don't get too much better.)
Due to its thin plate thickness, sweat/humidity & wear is just way too tough to maintain from it. The funny thing is that if you go thicker with the plate, you end up with a bubbling effect over time where you can pop it and peel it...
Gold may look pretty here and there, but it's the worst plating in terms of guitar hardware because of all the contact with sweat and general abuse...

Iv had this problem at work with a number of guitars and Iv found that Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes + a bit of elbow grease are best
