Not quite the same, but cool nonetheless.

Why not? It's an old guitar, and last I checked it hasn't seen use in years. To quote the man himself, it looks nice, but there's better sounding guitars.

Really? When did he say that? That's pretty interesting.

All I know is that he used that guitar A LOT from 1991 to 1995 and that I haven't seen it anymore since 1995.

I'm pretty sure I read it in the Guitar Legends: Metallica magazine from like 1996/1997. Someone asked him why he didn't use it on stage anymore. That's what he said.

Ah I see. Well I can imagine that. Not 2 guitars sound exactly the same. He still uses some black MX guitars live to this day. Probably ones that sound better to his ears?
And around '96 he also had his first KL, which was probably his best sounding guitar at that time.

darkalone

Obviously he's been moving away from Explorers the last few years. He's admitted to being a big LP fan, but never felt they were "metal" enough in the old days. Now that he's all "older and wiser" I guess he doesn't give a shit.

It looks like a good solid guitar.
Too bad James turned into a redneck and is into putting all those stupid decals and drawings on his guitars. It's the same with his tattoo's. He's gone over the top with it.
Really, don't you guys agree that James seems to have really changed around the year 2000 or something?
Especially if you compare his appearance and characteristics of the early 90s to the present, he seems a whole different person now.

It's a shame.

after seeing and downloading the live earth songs, I like the new sober hetfield. He lost mad weight, sang amazing during NEM, and just overall looks healthy. Plus he seems to rock the fuck out a lot more and lost a lot of his ego he had in the 2000 era.

Good for him. Plus he still has his hair.......sounds silly but i think it is funny when rockers get old and lose their shit and do the skullet or shaved with tats. Sorry Kerry King......shit aint workin, and Devin looks like a mook. I heard the dude from Poison, wears a hat or bandanna all the time as he ahs fake hair cause he lost his shit. :rollin:rollin:rollin:rollin

I don't know about all that..... but we all have opinions:) I personally don't think they sound half as good as they did back when I first saw them in 92. However, I do agree that their ego's have really been losted. While I use to love the major attitude they had I must say it has been a great experience for me the way they are now. They are all so personable and friendly. Papa Het > Metal God Het. Eventhough I do miss those days.

I like drunken megalomaniac Hetfield myself. He didn't give a shit and the band wasn't a democracy. Come to think of it all of my favorite music is written and performed by the drug addled mind. Brings out the creative side and lowers inhibition. Otherwise they'd be working regular jobs like us. Then they sober up and go to shit. But I still like Metallica drunk or sober.

Clearly the best tone eh? Funny, I don't think there's any part of the MOP tone that could be described as 'clear'. Sounds like noob tone to me, no mids, all bass and treble. Good songwriting; some of their best. Guitar tone and production was still in the dark ages, though. Black album, all the way up to garage inc, is my benchmark for when I tweak amps. Some great sounds on those records.

Which is no surprise to me as it says 'produced by Bob Rock' on the cover. They could never make it sound that good if it was purely a live record.

No. It says 'Produced by Bob Rock'. That must ring a bell. True live albums don't need producing. Artists overdub live albums all the time to delete bad notes or fuck ups.

Megafanboy to chime in. Love all the albums but just like 5 songs on load/reload.

Love St. Anger8o........why?
1 I love the riffs
2 I love dropped C tuning (but prefer opeC)
3 It sounds live (I don;t listen to the album versions at all, I have hundreds of live show stuff and just prefer live better than studio.)

IMO, best tone was on Garage Inc. Love the dirties. AJFA and MOP IMO have the best song writing, but I like bass and I like hearing a bass player do things the guitar are not. Adding color to the songs. IMO AJFA would sound so much better with a bass player doing different things behind the guitars as opposed to just mimicking the guitars. My 3-4 cents. ;)

I enjoy all the Metallicatz albums, except S&M which was lame. I don't care much for Garage Days Re-re disc 1 either.

St. Anger has some killer lyrics and guitar riffs. They looped way too much shit together with no real purpose on pro-tools and Lars snare sounded like a trash can. That's what really killed that album for some fans. Unfortunately Metallica lost themselves as Hetfield had a mid-life crises and are desperately trying to find their middle age identities. James so badly wants to be young and hip he comes off as a poser who's trying too hard. So he does what most men do. Whines about it and dresses like a teenager -er, from the 50s.

I mean if you think about it, all of us in some form or another have checks and balances. If I suddenly showed up wearing converse sneakers and greased back hair my friends and wife would say WTF? Who are you trying to be Jughead? But as a famous rock star he has nothing like that. He can do whatever he wants and everyone around him praises his greatness, except maybe Lars who chooses to ignore it. He needs a Mustaine or a Burton to say "what the fuck dude?" But I'm bored and wished to further discuss the topic. I'll stop now.

You apparently don't know too many car/motorhead guys. Those dudes wear Converse, slick their hair back, and pretty much dress just like James does these days. I used to work at a gas station. I got those guys in ALL the time.

It's a big change in character for the Metal cowboy. Wouldn't you agree?

Must be an east coast west coast thing. You can't stereo type all people by a few you know. I have several friends that are mechanics. One builds motorcycles, Orange County wanna-be, they don't dress like that. Come to think of it, they're usually pretty damn dirty. They're fingernails are black underneath. They where blue jumpsuits with their names above the shirt pocket. On weekends they drink and sleep a lot. The motorcycle guy wears a lot of plaid flannel and jeans with engineer boots, my personal favorite.

I don't know. Just bored and sharing thoughts on Het. Jeez, Dark, you jumped my case. Do you have a crush on Hetfield.:o

^I agree I love that james. James was always so original. You're right he's trying to be a beatnik greaser, which is purely his prerogative. As it is my prerogative to point it out. Seems like he idolizes Jesse James, who is a living cliche', imo, so it's a little poser-ish. I'm sure I'll hear it for that. Was Jesse a former bodyguard for Danzig? way off topic.

at that time he had the best singing performance ever. the seattle dvd is the best show of metallica i've ever heared, because they had so much power and this agressive voice...even the san diego show from 1992 (?) is not that good.

Totally agree.. i have seen them everytime they have been here in sweden since 92 and i have seen tons of botlegs and shit but nothing is even close to Seattle 89.. the voice the aggression in the voice.. omg hes just freaking crazy ... If you put ...And Justice For All.. on from seattle and listen to him singing and watching him act on stage.. you can almost feel the hate and you get scared lol.. i guess il never se that again :(

My 3-4 cents. ;)

That Garage Inc was a 50W Wizard Modern Classic amp cranked into a Marshall 4x12 with greenbacks, with heavy use of his 63 SG. Being the fanboy (I pretty much love everything they've done except the orchestra thing, and though St. Anger tests me), I bought a 50W Wizard Modern Classic and a 4x12 with greenbacks, AND at 2 on the volume dial it sends out 116 db. So dang loud.

No way he did the whole album with that setup. I've seen vids of him using his rack (with tons of stuff) and the KL guitar in the studio.
Are you saying that the tone you hear well in the intro of Mercyful Fate is not recorded using his classic setup?

Garage Inc was a mix of the Wizard and James' live rack. You can really hear
the Wizard tone on Turn the Page. I'm pretty sure the Mercyful Fate medley
is all Tri-Axis.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Turn the Page sounds very different from a song like Mercyful Fate.

Right, sorry didn't mean to imply it was ALL Wizard. Just that what was different about some of the tones on that album, vs immediately prior albums, was the Wizard/Greenbacks deal.

And since it's the studio, I imagine they layered in different amps and guitars for a lot of the rhythm tracks.

I don't. But Strapping Young Lad does. Devin is omniscient after all.

I'm really gasin' to try a wizard modern classic, this will NEVER happen unless I go hunting for one in America. Sigh, give it a couple years.
