View Full Version : Valve Junior
okay, so today i bought a new power tube for my epiphone valve junior...
it HAD a sovtek EL84, now it has a JJEL84 and WOW...it made a HUGE difference. the gutiar shop i went to didnt have any pre-amp tubes :x so i didnt get a chance to try out new ones yet but i'm just so amazed with the results of this new power tube... i barely even NEED an OD pedal now, the amp has balls now.

How are those mods going man?
well, today i was planning on installing bass and treble control in there; HOWEVER, radio shack didn't have the capacitors i needed so i couldnt do it. however, i've added a gain knob, changed out just about every resistor in the amp and i'm VERY happy with the results. I don't think i'll be installing a footswitchable anything in this head, because i'm very happy with my tone, i'll try and make some clips.

PRP i have a question for you. if i got a valve jr would i be able to run a bass preamp threw it into a bass cab. basically using it as a power amp.
FUCK! i have the worst recording equipment so it sounds like ass recorded.
and my digital camera battery is dead and i lost the charger so no video clips either (man that sounds like alot of bad excuses)
anyway, i'll keep trying to get clips up because i think some of you guys would like the way it sounds now.
ibanezaholic.... i'm sure you COULD do that...but i wouldnt, not stock in any case, you will not get much volume, u would need to do some mods and DEFINATELY some tube changes

hey PRP is there any way you could add a spring reverb in there or any kind of reverb at all. or would a boss pedal sound good infront of the valve jr.

^^^ There is a welth of knowlege here (http://www.sewatt.com/vj-mods) id probably look into say putting a FX Loop on it then adding say a Boss RV-5 in the loop for reverb.
I was gonna get a VJ and mod the hell outa it, but im gonna see what prices i can get for a JSX: Mini Colossal first as it has all i want plus more as stock.
i dunno about adding a reverb..since i don't really use it. but the VJ takes pedals out front well.
my FX loop will be installed tomorrow.

Imperium, does the Mini Colossal have a speaker output?
IMO, that's a great advantage the VJ has being a head... honestly, can't say I've played a Mini Colossal, but I personally don't think an 8" speaker's almost inexistant bass response compliments one of them quality all-tube amps :\

Fuck prp you are really loving all this MOD shit..
when to the fancy Stroble Lights get installed?
LRJ, yeah modding is fun...its so easy, and every little thing i change causes immediate notice in change of tone or some characteristic of the amp. i'm a tonenut. i am in search of the perfect tone, and what better way to get the ideal tone, than to make it myself?
the Valve Junior now has an FX loop

Yep it does im shure, just checked the Manual i downloaded, it does have a external speaker socket with a 4-8-16 ohm selector.
However i just want it for practice and bluesy stuff that i like to do on my strat as it will become part of the mini rig of doom for me.
i will soon be running my VJ beast into a 4x12
i wonder if it would be worth it to mod one of these things to be REALLY clean..... like JC clean...

What id do is have one with the Marshall mods and one with the Fender mods, then A/B them into a 4X12 cab.
that was my Original plan...but i can still get sparkly cleans on mine if i roll down the volume on the guitar itself, so i think i'm going to build a pedal that the guitar goes straight into, that basically cuts the signal from the gutiar to a 1/10th of what comes from the gutiar, to get that volume rolled down sound, without having to hope i roll back to the exact spot i want.
i'm curious as to how the fender mods would sound, as this whole time i've been squeezing every bit of gain and OD out of this amp, and fender mod would go the complete opposite direction.

I've been thinking about buying one of the Valve Jr's myself, they seem like they would be fun to experiment with.
my second VJ modding process starts tomorrow
