I'm liking the green/black vibe you have goin on with the 5152 & the flying v..
Question tho-does the 5152 have a chrome faceplate-it looks highly reflective... And if so where did you get it made?
Thanks!

Hey Pushead, Im loving the les paul customs specially the creme one nice. Whats the green les paul? is it Gibson very cool looking guitar.
Thanks man! The green one is one of the Chinese fakes. They were selling it at a local pawnshop, and I picked it up as a project. It used to be a pinkish purple color. It's got a piezo in it, too. I keep meaning to sand the headstock down, and put a flame maple vaneer on it and putting the green there, too.

I'd love to put an R0 into that group (replacing the Premium Plus flametop in the back), but I haven't been able to justify the cost.

yeah, those are "my colors" but now green is turning into the new black. My old band had black and green all over the stage. Drummers kit was green and black. Bass players rig was too. And you cant see but my cab has random shit spray painted in green all over the back and sides. It looked really cool in pics. Now I'm kinda tired of it.
Question tho-does the 5152 have a chrome faceplate-it looks highly reflective... And if so where did you get it made?
Thanks!
Not sure what you mean. Normally it has a chrome knob panel. I took all the knobs off and the clear plastic piece over the chrome, then painted the panel black, wrote my own controls on it, ie instead of pre I put gain and for res and pres I put "chug" and "cut." Then put the clear plastic back over it and put the knobs back on. As for the actual Faceplate, I took out the piece of wood that holds the logo on and just super glued the 5150II to the grill. Now my amp glows blue inside.
I should take some pics in the dark with it all lit up.

I got mine with my white Universe (UV777PWH) the same day. They were in two pawn shops that were next door to each other...lol So I went into the first, snagged the Jem, and went to lunch. Awesome man what a lucky day that was ehh, love the Universe in white coool. I looked forever for my LNG Jem, found it in Seattle I nearly fainted when I saw in in the glass case really, some guy said to me when I was trying it out thats an ugly color, I could have slapped him, silly wanker. I actually got my Multicolor Universe in a trade, I swapped a Simmons drum kit for it which was just by chance, 7 strings are nice to have though. My Jem 10th annv is signed by Vai also. The problem now is tons of guitars and running outa space, I need a new house I mean Castle...

All of mine are in their cases, lined up along the walls around the room with names on each case so i know who's inside...they do take up alot of space, but keeping them in their own room, they can be found easier. I used to have them all scattered around the house. You can see them lined up all around behind the ESP in this pic...lol Cases were put in first, THEN furniture... :lol

I used to keep mine in cases to alot of them but preffered to have them out and ready to go, most are on the wall hangers or stands. I have a few in cases, I find I play them more if thier out of the case.
I used to go to Pawn shops in Seattle and Canada all the time for guitars but the market is shit in Vancouver now... Craigslist now. I still do alot of trading through Ebay and places. I dreamed when I was very young of having several guitars, it happened and guitarmania happened I cant stop collecting yeah.

It started out early on when I was an Ibanez nut... When I just had Petruccis and Jems/Universes and RG's, they all fit in the same UV1000-C case from Ibanez. So I'd have a line of about 9 or 10 cases and not know which was what...lol

Thanks man. Dont get me wrong the 5150s are my favorite amps too. Right now I play using a Vox Valvetronix and straight up, its castration. I run the little combo through an Orange 4x12. The Vintage 30s are just what it needs to make it sound better than guitar hero.
I currently saving up for a new 6505. Not the II this time cuz I found it having more features than needed. Thats funny what you said about the ENGL, H&K and Mesas. I was considering buying any of those to be a second amp complimenting the 6505. Ièll have to try them all out and see how the tone suits me.

I liked the powerball but not more then the 5150. Together it's godly. The 5150's have so much focus on upper mids, it's hard to find another amp simular. They only ones I'd consider now would be the Fireball, Blackmore (my other guitarist has one), Splawn of some sort most likely Nitro, or a H&K Duo-tone. But thats some serious $$$. I also really like the Randall V2 but I'm a little hesitant.

09-09-2008, 01:55 PM
I LOVE my Soldano, never been more happy with an amp. It's basic, only one channel, but i don't miss any channels. But i did miss a switchable solo volume, like i had on the Triple recto. My ampsales man knew i was searching for a solution (tried out numerous pedals), but then he called that he modded another avenger at their store, he asked if i was interested.
It doesnt do any thing to the sound, only volume, so that's the mod i have had installed.
But is a reaaaaallllyyyy awesome amp!
Artep.of.Filth
09-09-2008, 02:58 PM
You probably know we're gonna ask... was there something wrong with its volume that made you get it done? Or perhaps you got it modded that way before you bought it?

I think he ment the mod was a solo boost option. It's a simple mod that could be done to probably any amp.

Basically, it works better this way than it does just running it at the end of the line. It doesn't affect the original signal/tone as much this way.
That said, I still use it as little as possible because I really prefer the natural resonance and a little controlled feedback. When I can get a less noisy/smoother OD pedal I'm hoping I can get away with not using a gate at all.

Right on. I'm totally going to get a 7-banger one day, but for now the bari suits me just fine.
I use the F# instead of G because we do a lot of weird off-chords. Stuff that sounds kinda wrong, but it's intentionally so.

Dude I'd rather do the baritone but when the other guitarist has a 7 and we do a lot of harmonies, it's just easier to have a 7 also. plus with some of the chord formations we do I'd have to tune the f# up for some songs, then back down for others. It's just a pain in the ass. I'm really digging 7's. You can get some really "wide" or "full" sounding chords. Kinda hard for me to explain. Easier to just show kinda thing. Plus I do a lot of leads and on a baritone it's kinda weird. Fret spacing is all different.

I know what you mean about the fullness of the chords on the 7.
And I'm sure I'll get one in the future, just not yet. It'll be weird if I do though. I'd actually have more strings than my bass player!
It took me a few weeks to get used to the fret spacing on the baritone (my Warlock is a 24.75" scale), but I love it now.

my bud in Ekotren just got an ESP endorsement. He was using Schecters but ESP gave him a couple MH400B's. I checked it out last friday when we palyed with them in Fort Myers. Good shit. I dug it. But now I'm, used to the wide ass fingerboards of 7's.

This is my rack, i built it at the beginning of this year. I bought everything used and i think it sounds pretty damn good, and its fuckin loud as hell. I dont have to turn the mesa up past 2 in order to get some fuckin volume. Getting rid of the BBE, it just adds too much feedback and i dont need it anymore. The engl has pretty good tone, though the mesa really fills in the gaps. Also, that cabs not a peavy... its an avatar i just had a peavy thing laying around so i threw that shit on.
Then theres the h207 that i just put some dimarzios in. Got it for $250 and its a good guitar so.. score.

I kinda thought the same thing after I uploaded the pic to my PC. It's actually the edge of the parking lot of my jam space, which is in a very urban area. Atlanta just happens to be a very green city.
I had snapped some shots inside and they kinda looked like shit so I decided to try and catch some sunlight while i could. The sun was setting behind the building but was still hitting bumper level on my car so I opened up the back and set up the shot.

I LOVE it. The KH1 is like a cross between a blackface module and a jc120 tone. The KH2 can cover anything from oldschool marshall stuff to a bit heavier tones. Great for rhythm stuff. For crazy leads and super dry/tight metal stuff, the KH3 is a beast. The head itself is pretty cool too. I love the easy layout, tube biasing stuff, fx loops, etc.

In my experience, (albeit with different EQs) there is less grit or noise in the signal if the curve is centered around 0dB.

Boosting adds noise to a signal typically. So an all cutting EQ curve is actually a pretty good idea.

Wha wha? That's very very wrong, cutting is just attenuating a electrical signal. Boosting not only adds noise, but adds phase problems. Cutting doesn't.

So attenuating an electric signal is better than doing nothing to it at all? Somehow I don't follow that logic. I'd rather boost some frequency ranges 2dB and cut others 2dB instead of cutting every range between 4 and 10dB and turning the amp up to compensate.

When you cut a signal, some of that signal is reduced evenly, even the noise present.
When you boost a signal, the signal has to go through transistors and other such circuitry, which can add noise as well as phase issues. So not only do you have the original signal + noise, you have the amplified original signal, amplified noise, and additional noise caused by the EQ circuit.
A power amp usually has a better amplification process than an EQ circuit, so I would prefer to use the power amp to turn it up rather than the EQ.

What he said. Go check out any graphic EQ at any professional venue or show and you'll never, ever, ever see a boost.
Usually you won't see such drastic cuts either.

that makes logical sense to me, i would think that's probably the right answer here.
i've never studied the subject, i had just "centered around 0" in order to make it easier on my brain what i'm doing with the eq. but my eq's have never been high-end units, so i can imagine that boosting via one is more likely to harm my sound, than figuring out what's the highest relative spread i'm dealing with, put that highest slider at 0, and determine what is the new relative "flat" level.
granted for me my power amps aren't high-end units either, but they are probably more well-equipped to boost the signal cleanly, than any geq i'd own on my budget.
as always though: listen and see what you think.
a lot of stuff we tweak i feel becomes hair-splitting, so the cut-only method is probably "correct" and may also be important in a pro studio, but for a hack like me it may not matter.
:)

I'll add that my MkIII with the graphic EQ built into the preamp doesn't generate a whole lot of extra noise with boosted frequencies. However I'm concerned that using a similar curve with an outboard EQ on my triaxis will, while being tonally similar to the MkIII, be a fuckload noisier.
I guess its time to ask Boogie for a custom EQ? :o

Its funny that you mentioned the custom eq, because I have a buddy who got his studio preamp modded, so that he could use the graphic eq of the studio pre with his triaxis to get more of a Mark sound. But from what I've heard, you have to have a pretty good relationship with Mike Bendinelli to have that done.

Thanks man. If you are planning on upgrading to an ENGL head one day, I would totally recommend you did. I upgraded to the Fireball from a Vox valvetronix combo. Before I had the Vox, I played a 5150II. Basically I was really happy with the peavey to the point that I was going to buy a 6505 instead of the ENGL. Even though I'm familiar with the 6505, I'm glad I went ENGL. The peavey has a much narrower window of good tone.
I'm really picky and every other amp I've had I could find more things wrong with it than right. Even though I've only had the ENGL 5 days, I cant find a single thing wrong with it. Seriously, in this price range the other brands offer a Single Rectifier or JCM900 etc, the choice is easy. Go with the ENGL, you get a tone from their $3000 amps at an intermediate price.

The Fireball is a 2 channel, clean and lead. The EQ, presence and gain affect both channels however there is a master volume for each.
Unless you're after a basic, plug and play amp I would recommend the Powerball. The reason I didnt is I would never use 4 channels, even 3 is a lot to me, I didnt need 100 watts - 60 is good and the fireball is a few hundred dollars cheaper.
If I start saving now, maybe by 2010 I can afford an Invader! rofl.

Ya, I used a Boss Metal Zone for around 10 years with that amp.. loved it. Originally bought the Metal Zone becuz it allowed me to have both gain & clean at the stomp of a foot.. and also because I figured the head was already 10+ years old I'd never find the proper footswitch for it that matched the amp. Then I fell in love with the MT-2 & it was all over from there-never looked for another footswitch. Although I will say that it sounds pretty damn good as a standalone unit.. nice Accutronics reverb too. :)

Oh and I need to put on those Deetzul logo's. Peter wanted mine and sent me new ones. He wanted to confirm something with a dealer.

/\/\ you really should spend $100-200 on a nice(r) chair Sean... it'd make a world of difference, last you a long time(not as long as that rack, but hey! :rollin ) and you'd barely put a dent in your gear fund. Win/WIN! :)

headstock is fucked up.
I had to do a repair.

I have a XT as well.
Ill put it to you this way, my X3 is the all singing all dancing thing, the XT im keeping for a MIDI effects processor for a future rig, and the Pocket Pod... Well for silent practice that dosnt requre the full switching on of the X3 or if i take my guitar anywhere and cant take the Pod XT or X3, the Pocket pod will be the thing to fill in there.
Basically to cover all bases.
