View Full Version : Are all 100w amps equally loud?

I only ask because I just traded up my TSL100 head for a DSL100 head on my 4x12 Marshall cab. The DSL, which has new tubes and similar bias, is just not quite as painfully loud. However it does have a lot of volume still. Is this normal? Thanks.

It all depends on the master volume, headroom that the amp runs at, etc.

For instance, the master volume on a Peavey 5150 has a very different curve to it than my VHT power amp. The VHT keeps getting louder all the way from 0-10, but the 5150 only got louder from 0-4. After that it just got more saturated and eventually buzzier and noisier.

+1 Should be around the same volume since they are the same type of amps(marshall) basically. Watts are not a true measurement of volume though. Watts (RMS) are a measurement of clean power headroom. The mids could be voiced slightly different though, which could be the reason the TSL sounds louder than the DSL. Just a thought.

That's....kinda surprising, actually.
