I used the lead 2 gain channel for this one.
I'm not used to recording cleans so they sound funky and I totally improvised the leads since I dont know them.
I also used my favorite Marshall 1960A cab impluse file.

I'm supposed to start jamming with a Mercyful Fate / King Diamond Tribute band soon with a singer who can pull off convincing King Diamond vocals.

Thanks!

I am recording my ENGL SE direct (no power amp or mic/cab)

The signal chain is: Guitar > SE > MBox 2 Mini > Cubase SX v2.01
In cubase I use the KeFIR plugin on the guitar track and load a cab impulse file.

as usual, no post eqing, no parallel compression, no quad tracking, no layering......nothing.
Just one track panned left, and one track panned right.

You're running a Mac or a PC? Cause I wanna try impulses myself but haven't been able to find a plug-in to do so...

PC.

I use this one -> http://habib.webhost.pl/vst_keFIR.php
Its free and doesnt take up hardly any CPU.

thanks, man... I'm afraid that one wouldn't work, I'm running a Mac myself :(

I remember I had found a plug-in that runs impulses on the Sneap forum, but I can't find the installation file anywhere on my computer now nor in the Sneap forum... darn..

Nice to see you using the MBox2 Mini as well, i think im gonna have to get Cubase as i feel that altho ProTools LE is easy as hell to use, it lacks Mixdown abilities i feel.

The only software that I know of that supports external impulses that works on a MAC is Revalver MKII -> http://www.alienconnections.com/products.htm

I'd be using Pro Tools LE v7.03 except I couldnt find an RTAS plugin for cab impulse files.

I like them both. Cubase and Pro Tools both work for what I do. It may just be my imagination....but it seems to me that Pro Tools has a wider space for mixes than cubase does. It feels like tracks and mixes in Pro Tools have more seperation than they do in cubase. Like if Pro Tools has a wider stereo image in which to place the tracks or something.

I've heard that has to do with the Pan Law. Something about the middle of the stereo field is turned down 3db and the outer edges are pushed up a little.

Is there a way to apply that law or make a change in Cubase so that the mix feels wider, more spacier, like Pro Tools does?

I don't know how to work Cubase, but in Reaper if you right click on the Master Pan control it'll bring up the Pan Law.

I just checked my next cubase recording project setup and the stereo pan law is already set for -3db in cubase (by default). As I stated earlier....it may just be my imagination...but it seems that Pro Tools has more room and separation between tracks in the mixes.

ya it dose sound like iron maiden, atleast before it gets to the clear part, the clear part and after it kinda reminds me of One by Metallica, but it doesnt really sound like any one band i can think of. good work getting your own style in there
