I'm in the market to buy a new 'metal' pedal. I was scoping out the Digitech Death metal; only heard it briefly and liked the sound. I just got offered a BOSS Metal Zone for 40$; which would you guys choose? Any other 'better' ones? I'm a fan of the used pedals, price wise, anything over 80$ isn't ideal for me! haha.

Metal Zone. In the long run the Metal Zone is better than the Digi. More versitle, better tones once it's dialed in. The knobs are super sensitive so it'll take a little longer to get dialed in, but not much.

Dude, the EMG pedalz is teh brootz!

Seriously though, the metal zone is much better than the Digi, but they both sound thin to me. If I where you, start saving up for an amp with good distortion ;)

I still favor the discontinued DOD FX56 American Metal.

It was smooth, quiet, and thick with pronounced harmonics, very balanced.

for real man. I have 1. One of my favorites too. But, between the digi and MT2 I'd go for MT2. The Krank pedal is good too. Maybe better than their amps. :rollin:rollin:rollin

haha I havn't! I'm just starting to get into buying Pedals - never really cared. But since my playing has increased - and my skill isn't comparable to shit in a can - i'd like to play around with pedals. Was lucky and picked up a mint Crybaby for 20$ last week, but not a fan of the clean....

check out the Digitech GNX series. I own a GNX1 and you can get plenty of diffferent tones. Also look into the RP series..don't know if theyre any good, but they look like they were made to be like the GNX series

Out of the digitech and the Boss, I prefer the Boss.

The Electro Harmonix Metal Muff is excellent, I would say it has a more amp like distortion tone than either of those. The RAT is definately worth checking out too, it has a thicker tone.

No distortion pedal is gonna sound better than what the Line 6 has housed in it already. Buy something OTHER than a distortion pedal, please! Delay, chorus, phaser, you know, something useful. ;)

seriously... try the Line 6 Uber Metal. Ive had the BOSS Metal Zone for quite a while and liked it, but the Uber Metal sounds better, is more versatile and has a built in noise gate :)

I like both the Digitech Metal Master and the Boss MT-2. Both are qutie good IMO, the Digitech has the old DOD sound in it as well (which the Boss doesn't) but eats batteries like crazy.
The Line6 one... i can't get friendly with it.
The only pedals I also tried and hated were the Rocktron Metal Planet (awful) and the H&K Warp Factor (mushy).

The only metal pedals I've ever tried and liked were the EHX Metal Muff (sweet, versatile metal tones, easy to dial in and not actually a fuzz), and the Zoom Tri-Metal - try to pick one up used on eBay, they sound unholy for the price!

If your are serious about a pedal. Get a 'Rocktron Silver Dragon' tube distortion pedal. I have one and it make my solid state 50w Marshall MGDFX amp sound like a bona fide tube amplifier. I was thinking of getting the new 'Seymour Duncan Twin Tube MAYHEM' tube pedal as well, but I bought a Mesa 100w Roadster head and a 2x12 Horizontal cab on my income tax return. Don't need them now, but YOU really should look for clips of these and they'll blow the Digitech and the BOSS MT way out of the water.

I am really surprised by how many people like Metal Zones. I think they totally suck out your low end freq. Interesting.

I have the boss metal-zone (mt2) and it sounds good for the solo. but in my opinion, it lacks some bass for the rythm... a real lack of bass. but it is very kickass for solos. the r-fier on my cube is better for the rythm but worst for the solos. you have to hear them both and judge yourself (try them in the same amp with the same guitar)

when i had the metal zone i had to get an 7 band EQ infront of it to dial it in to what i wanted, so i sold it got a better amp and when im recording ill use my older non peavy Damage Control Demonizer for distortion tones, as well as a warm clean tone

I have a MT2and after a year I decided I have had enough of frying up my ears. I'd go for Electro Harmonix Metal Muff...great tone for a cheaper pedal
(really, it's cheaper than a MT2)

I've heard good things about the Boss Metal Core...

Either way, I'd just go Pocket POD for the price of a Metal Zone... Metal Zones are, IMO, waaaaay fizzy, saturated and kinda trebly...

I forgot to mention, mine is the Humphrey Audio modded MT-2. Huge improvement over the stock version. It's a lot smoother, not nearly as fizzy or nasally.

The ElectroHarmonix Metal Muff is great! Amazingly no one has mentioned 3 of the best yet........Boss Metal Core, Krank Distortus Maximus, and the Radial Hot British :evil

However, as was said before, Line6 has plently of gain built in! Plus distorting on the way into digital amps can sound like crap.

What I like to do is use the Metal Zone as a boost. Turn the distortion to 0, leave the tone controls in the middle and crank the level up. Use this on top of your distortion channel, you may have to back the gain off slighlty from what your used to. Generally this gives you a thicker sound than you would get from the pedal alone and more crunch than you would get from the amp alone...it's a win win situation!

about the MT2: you have to take the time and tweak it, 'till you get what you're after!
it's verry versatile and you have lot's of controls on the mids... but also verry sensitive, so take small steps, don't rush it.
(i won't part with mine anytime soon)

+1. I don't have it.. but am very interested & have heard superb reviews from fellow gainiacs.

I also agree with this 100% Small steps to tweak & you can get anything from Tool to Pumpkins to PAN-FUCKIN-TERA! :)~
