Put an EMG 81 in my Alexi 600 today

I enjoyed the HZ pickup for a couple months (especially the Lamb of God sounds I got out of it), but over time I started to wish for the attack and sustain of the 81 that I have in my Eclipse II, so I grabbed another 81 for $100 at my favorite guitar shop.

I had never installed pickups before or soldered anything, but I figured this would be a great opportunity to learn, since the Alexi 600 only has 1 volume control and thus extremely simple wiring. I picked up a soldering gun and some wire for $40 at my local hardware store, printed out a wiring diagram, and went at it.

Here's some pics. All in all it took me about 2 and a half hours, but I was going extremely slow and careful to keep track of what I was doing:

It plays great now! I'm really glad I went for it.

Now, to stick that HZ in my old Epiphone Les Paul Custom :evil muahahaha.

The attack and sustain become much much stronger. It makes playing much easier and everything just responds and sounds much better, especially at low volumes where the HZ would kind of fade and seem weak.

my buddy put an 81 in his alexi600 the new alexis have the duncan blackout in it but the 81 is a better move then the hz....it was worth the change

Nice job, it always feels good after doing your own mods to your guitar and coming out on top. Good call on the tape over the saddle blocks, I hate when those fall out of the Floyd and you have to get down on your hands and knees to find em.

Hack up your wiring a bit and stick a second 9v on there, in series.

Your guitar will really come alive.
