View Full Version : My MX is now a year old
Now that the "new" has officially worn off, I think it's time to make some modifcations to my MX-2...to make it more like teh Jaymz. :lol
I ordered the following from Music123.com (at a discounted price, no less):
1 TonePros locking Tune-O-Matic & Stopbar set
1 EMG-60
1 set of Sperzel locking tuners
1 set of Schaller strap locks
While I wait for the parts to arrive (on Monday), I think I'll take my guitar apart this weekend and clean it up a bit. Here's a before photo:

You're going to have to drill the old bridge post holes out to accept the new ones of the TonePros.

James older Explorers had the same bridge thats on your MX now.
You could leave the old bridge on and kick it old school Hetfield.

Now that sucks. I suppose I could just attach the bridge and stopbar to the existing posts, no?

Nope, Tonepros bridges have large posts.

:lol What can I say, it's taken me a year of debating whether to leave the guitar stock or not. I'm OCD like that. In the end, however, I like the ease of changing strings with a locking bridge/stopbar/tuners set...not to mention the added sustain. The pickup and straplocks are the icing on the cake.

Use the tip Ans gave me with Sperzels. I do it to all my guitars now. Just take needle nose pliers, pop off the pin on the sperzel you would have to drill, line em up, and tighten them nicely. I have had not tuning or intonation problems what so ever doing this to a few guitars. (Thanks Ans :) )

Yeah, the idea of drilling holes in the headstock certainly made me hold off on getting Sperzels installed for the longest time. Reading yours and Ans' threads made my decision to mod my guitar a lot easier. :D

I really doubt it will improve noticeably. IMO, the stuff like locking the bridge to posts to make it sound better is just invented by elitists who want a profit on their product. I'd never do any drilling to a guitar in the MX price range anyway. I bet there's tons of guitars out there that sustain better than most guitars with Tone Pros hardware fitted.
Sperzels without pins = win
Straplocks = win
EMG60 = win and very easy to swap

That's very possible. At a minimum, I like the fact that the stopbar won't slide off and scratch the finish when I remove all the strings to clean the fretboard. :p

Yes, that's annoying indeed! But I always put tape on the stop bar and bridge when I do that. To make sure I don't fuck up the setup of the bridge.

Nope. No finish cracks whatsoever; the guitar is nearly flawless.
Well, I received the parts for my MX (except the Sperzels which are on backorder ). So far, I've installed the TonePros set...no modification/drilling required. Next I plan on installing the Schaller straplocks and the EMG-60. I'll post new pics tonight.

Which Tone Pros set did you use for your MX. I know there are a couple different set ups
depending on the style of bridge. Just curious since I may upgrade my black MX as well.

Damn, those won't work on my black MX. It's a 2003, and has the old style bridge where it's just a threaded post with no bushing where it goes into the body. That's probably why people thought you would need to drill out for the Tone Pros, they assumed you had the older style. My 2007 MX has the newer style bridge with the larger post/bushing where it goes into the body so the Tone Pros would be a drop in. Oh well, I guess I'll keep the old bridge. I just got through doing some mods to the black MX and I don't really want to tear it apart again just for the bridge. I'm really happy with it as is so I think I'll leave well enough alone. When you put the Sperzels in I recommend having someone fill the holes and respray the back of the headstock. It's usually not too expensive and you can still keep your serial number. I had mine done and the Sperzels look like they were factory installed. Good luck with all your mods man.

Sorry to hear about your MX bridge situation; perhaps the TonePros USA set would work instead, no? Thanks for the Sperzel installation advice, I'll have to look into that. The results are pretty sweet-looking. :D

Yeah with the old style posts I think you're pretty much stuck with drilling
them out to accept the Tone Pros posts. Not a big deal, the stock bridge
works fine and the black MX is killer sounding, so I figure if its not broke
don't fix it.

Thank you.
The fretboard is Ebony. The maple neck and ebony was adviced to me by an experienced luthier. He said it would sound too muddy with a mahogany neck. Also, I'm not adding EMG's but passive Duncans, a Distortion in the bridge and 59 in the neck. I've tried the set in another guitar temporarly and I didn't really dig the Distortion humbucker. It sounded too harsh in that guitar. If I don't like the duncans I will put in EMG's, because I have some laying around here too. But first I wanna try the Duncans because that was what I originally intended. Other guitar = new chances.
That looks hot Metfuk!!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you sir!
EDIT:

That would be cool but it's gonna be a ton of work! And I don't even know if I'd like the sound of the alder body. So we'll see how it'll sound. If it sucks, I'm gonna make a mahogany body for it and I may reconsider doing a body veneer too.

No I don't sell. I've bought my body from some ebayer.
I'd have loved to get a mahogany body but they didn't have one. Yours looks great! But judging from what I see in the pic, it also isn't mahogany?
Yesterday I've had my Explorer stringed up for the first time so I could finally play it over an amp and hear how it sounds. It's interesting, but it can't touch my Gibson in heaviness and warmth (both are in E standard). It does play nicely, even though it isn't even set up.
One thing that bothers me is the thickness of the neck. I wanted a thin U shape. So a bit less thick than a Gibson. But I guess something went wrong somewhere down the road, because it's even fatter than a Gibson now! :x I like my Gibson neck, but this handbuilt one is too fat for my taste. I guess I'm gonna fix it, otherwise I'm not really gonna enjoy it as much as I'd want to. :\

thanks man!Yeah we must have bought the body from the same guy, i was really surprised with the overall quality of the craftsman ship, the only thing was the volume knob hole is too close to the stop bar, on the actual MX its a little further away from it. And yes the body is alder i wanted mahogany but i had no other choice, i recently got lucky and found an ESP Custom MX neck on the bay in excellent condition, it is mahogany and as far as an alder body and mahogany neck i have heard bad things from a few people on here as far as it sounding too muddy, but all that really comes down to your amp and setup so im not to o worried. but i have to compliment you on your work, the neck looks awesome, good luck on fixing the fatness
