I have had many LTDs, but none longer than this one. Considering they go for around $400 used (in great shape), they are a great value in the LP Studio market. Good hardware and build quality deliver good sound and feel. Most of you know what happens to a guitar with chrome hardware at my house, but this and the 7 will remain stock (except for the speed knobs of course). I have considered the black treatment but chrome and SDs just seem to fit this pig. Of course the obligatory attention ho' pics:

How would you say do these pickups sound with the covers? Is it a huge difference, compared to the non covered ones, like they say?

I don't think so. I considered taking them off, but then decided against it. It has a crunchy growl that I like as it is. Considering its all mahogany it is not very dark sounding, compared to an MX for example.

Its just a reflection.

a buddy of mine's got the black version of it... and personally, I'd have to say it's the best below-1k bucks guitar I've ever laid my hands on...
his has got a defect, tho... the bridge pickup is too far away from the bridge... the distance between both pickups looks like if it were a 24-fret guitar... I'll see if I can find pics of it...

Tuners, bridges, dome knobs, tail pieces, passives pups, active pups, mounting screws, pup rings, etc.. You name it.

I would not like that, and would return it. I would be curious to see it though.

I used to only want eboner, but now it just does not matter too much to me. It just depends on the guitar. Then again, I have never ordered a guitar with any other board but eboner, so there you go.

here, sorry about the tiny pic, but it's the best I could find of it...
... when I got a chance to try out his, it wasn't THAT bad, actually, I think the trebly tone of the JB was helpin in there, but it did make distorted settings sound kinda... weird
of course, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place, but we don't get that much availability over here and my buddy isn't exactly a guitar expert, so he doesn't mind too much...

Woah dood, thats fucked up. I understand what you are saying about availability, but still that is not like a minor finish blem. That is a major construction error and a QC embarrassment. I would not accept it, but if it works for him, so be it.

Thanks mate. I'm asking since I have an EC400 VF coming in in a week and a half and I was thinking about having my luthier remove the pickup covers... but I'm still not sure whether it's worth it. Mmh.

Love those goldtops :) I wanted to get one with the natural back but haven't seen one for awhile. I also really liked the Duncans in mine but I went the EMG route cuz I am/was/am going to get one of the VFs and keep Duncans in there.

Most of the tuners I have left are "ESP" chrome Gotoh 6-inline style machine heads. If you are interested let me know, I will get some pics.

I just got a used EC400AT "Goldtop" off the Bay. I love it. I think the chrome covers do the guitar justice. Mine has the natural back. I love the weight of it. I use it when I play Lamb of God. Drop "D". Those Duncans were the right choice by ESP.

Funk, How do you think me shaving the paint off the neck would be? I know you've done this to your LPC but it has a maple neck no?

Yeah, the LPC has a maple neck. I dunno how your guitar would be. I had an easy time of it because of the over 20 year old nitro finish. It came off fairly easily with a rigid razor and some fine grit paper to sand the nicks. I would imagine poly finishes would be a bit more difficult, but if you take your time with gradual coarse to fine grit paper, you should be fine. Have fun!

would the mahogany be ok with no finish besides oil?

Yeah sure, just put something on it whether it be oil, wax, wipe on poly, or whatever. The oils from your skin will contribute a little over time as well. The yellow Horizon I have on order will have an unfinished mahogany neck as well. I am looking forward to it.
