I have been playing the guitar for close to 15 years now and really enjoy it. My uncles band is looking for a bass player and is having a really hard time finding one. He is trying to talk me into playing bass for them. I have never given the bass a try before, I know its similar in some ways. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever made the switch or regularly plays both. Is it a pretty easy transition? Any info would be helpful in making my decision.

I switched to bass and only a couple of times thought about going back.
Starting and getting the basics is easy then it gets tricky. Its always good to be fluent in both guitar and bass.

I swapped over for a couple of jams with another band. It's awesome fun! Im not a lead guitarist, I dont like widdly widdly widdly music so I found playing the bass really fun! The interaction with the dynamics of the drums and the power behind the instrument is great!

I'm thinking about switching over to bass, same reason as you, can't find a bass player heh. I want to go 5 string for some reason though...

Actually, my girlfriend loves bass players.
I really don't know why either, she just likes basses. =\

it's because 5 bangers are more b00tal!
I've been playing the 4 string at practice and it feels more fun and free. And also because my F205 is shot to bloody hell.
I just wanted to say bloody hell

Thanks for all the comments, I am still giving it some serious thought. I am definitely NOT giving up playing my guitar no matter what I decide, though if I pick up the bass, I am sure I will have to devote alot of time to it.

ive been playing bass alot more lately, especially after i got my new one
what ive noticed is that it seems to be making me try alot harder to be better at both bass and guitar
like if im playing guitar for a couple hours and then i pull one of the basses out, i play my ass and it works the same if im playing bass first
the main reason i started playin bass again is because i was supposed to start jammin with some friends but that still has yet to happen
just do both
if nothing else, it might at least make you approach the guitar a little differently and thats never been a bad thing for anyone:D

old strings on bass sound way more shitty than on guitar, IMO, because the bass is 99.9% of the time on a clean setting...
well, they're especially shitty on my setup because my whole bass tone is based around brightness and punchiness..

I traded bass for guitar 7 years ago. You run into dead ends and boring slumps with bass. At least I did. Guitar opportunities seem endless.
I plan on taking up bass when my birthday comes up. I'm not giving up guitar, just using my knowledge on guitar to play bass to bring another side to my recordings. I'm getting a fretless, because they are just so much more fun to play IMO, and you can get some really unique and expressive sounds. I was originally just going to get a bass just to use for recording, but after playing around with a fretless in stores, I'm going to devote some more time and practice in the instrument so I can become more proficient at it.

KFW, what kind of Bass? Have you played a Stuart Spector? His fretless is a beauty. Slim profile neck thru. Also, check out the 1996 Fender P bass Lyte, usually on eBay. I owned one, the action on that neck was like a guitar. Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling is legendary too as is a fretless Ric. ;)
It's a cheap SX fretless from Rondo. I can't get anything that costs too much, and since it's not as big as an endeavor as guitar, I'm less picky about what I get. I figured it's the best bet I can get for $180.

Awesome man. Wasn't sure how deep you were going. Let me know how it is when you get it. Every now and then I get the itch, but I'm out of basses.
