^marshall's new four-channel amp
I personally love the clips I've heard of the JVM, but haven't tried one in person

i'd pick a jvm over any rec, jmo,
i'd pick a jvm over most of what marshall makes right now, but i do like their reissue and jcm800 amps, but nowhere near as much as i love my splawn, splawn kills all things marshall imo.
rec:
crappy cleans
good od
good higain
a bit loose for highgain
very sturdy build
need a noisegate for highgain, but imo ALL highgain amps need one.
jvm
excellent clean
good od and tons of variants of it
good highgain
tighter higain than a rec, but having el34's, not as tight as a kt88 amp like my splawn
questionable build sturdiness (i say questionable, not bad )
need a noisegate for highgain
if you can afford either of these amps, there are a lot of other amps you should consider.
engl
vht
splawn
trace/voodoo
other mesas
etc.

To my ears new marshalls are crap.
I never liked marshall's tone but the older ones sound brutally better than the new ones.
They are hollow, mesas are full of harmonics, newer marshalls sound like boss distortions pedals.
I don't know JVM but knowing it's a newer model I'm out.
But that's just my taste.

treva, try using the mid knob.
it makes marshalls open up.

Noupe I don't like marshall's tone.
Since I played my fist mesa=dc-5 ( I guess it was in 1989 ! ),I never liked any other amp.
I played every famous amps and labels,I love mesa.
Plus mesas are builted like tanks, marshalls if you open ,you will see hundreds of plastic pieces.

Ive never tried the marshall so my opinions void, but the recto's do shine with the lower tunings.

The Marshall Vintage Modern isn't in the same class (tone wise) as the JVM, ENGL's, recto's, IMO. It's definately an amp geared towards classic rock sounds, and does not get saturated very well.
I loved the JVM when I had it, but when I compared it back to back, I had to stick with my Roadster. Then, I saw a clip of a JVM test done on Youtube by some regular Joe, and loved how thick it sounded! That re-fueled my GAS for one, but when I tried the next one we got in, the Roadster won again.
The JVM is my favorite Marshall amp right now, but I think the the Roadster is better in most aspects.
I would love to try one of the 4 channel ENGL SE's, but since they are not available locally, I won't ever try one. I just have that big of a desire to try one, even though I bet they sound awesome. I'm kinda funny that way.:\

Definitely: Check them both out, Compare the Pro's to Con's, and base your decision off that. Marshall's aren't really my thing, but they are great amps. If I had to play a Marshall, I'd probably go with either the Mode Four, DSL 100, or TSL 100. Haven't played the JVM yet, but I've heard good things. Though, I'd lean more towards a Mesa Triple Rec. The Triple Rec is a fantastic amp. If it was me, Mesa ALL the way any day of the week

Honestly, I'm a Line 6 guy. But, I would play a Mesa ANYTIME. I love their stuff. I may look into one for the future

Go for the MESA, every metal band I see using a marshall they all have to push it with some type of pedal. Of coarse, pushed with a tubescreamer or something, marshalls can sound pretty:cool: good. But if you want a Metal sound right out of the box, go for the Mesa.

I played on a JVM at Sam Ash on saturday and it sounded like a fuzz pedal. It was very mushy and pretty crappy sounding. They had a bunch of different ones but this was a 50watt half stack that had a very simple control panel like a JCM800 has. It only had like 7 or 8 knobs total.

There's a 50W JVM out there???
Anyway, I played with the 100W head before, I'll have to say it's a better amp in the past couple of years, but still a meh...

i know nothing about the vintage modern but i've heard at least 3 people online review it to be bad sounding.
whoever runs marshall has NO brains, and it's damn sad imo.
- they overpriced the plexi ri's, and they're good but not great.
- they came out with a solidstate power amp in the modefour
- and now this vintage modern.
the jvm sounds good to me, and isn't overpriced. but that's a bad losses-to-wins ratio for new products in recent years for them.
i play a Splawn.

Seemingly Marshall are coming out with yet more new amps this NAMM as well, more variants on the JVM, a 3 channel 50 watter (Head & Combo) and a 2 Channel 40 Watter (Head & Combo) as well as a EL84 2 channel 10-20 Watt combo and micro head as well. Thats what the Marshall rep was saying to one of my dealers when i was in checking out what used gear they had not 3 weeks ago.
But Mesa will be coming out with with a couple more new things as well, still no little snippets from them, but it will be intresting for shure what ever it is.
The JVM is a OK sounding amp, i just prefer the tone of a Mesa as it sounds more harmonically rich to my ears. I would love to get a Mesa and deal with my amp worries, but i feel that a Peavey is more bang for the buck as they have great quality products that are relyable and are built both for the studio and the road, they are more of a musicians choice brand, not their dream amps, but the ones they choose to do they buisness, without the bullshit!!!

esp gaijin, i couldn't agree with you more. i currently have a jvm and it rocks. the amp was a little noisy at first but after i replaced the pre amp tubes it was good to go:). Im gassing to get another splawn, i would like to pick up a pro stock with kt88s.

I recently traded a Road King 1 in for a JVM full stack (JVM 401 head with 2 x 1960 cabs). I think the Road King is a fantastic amp but the cleans were lousy and its too fiddly. Plus I couldnt afford new cabs that I needed and for the price of one second hand head I got a brand new full stack thats in my opinion, just as good or at least more "me".
Mesa's are superb amps but Marshalls (at least the JVM anyway) kick all sorts of ass. Especially for the money.
Mesa = Bass and Treble.
Marshall = MIDDLE!!!
My bass player is happy again. :)

Ehh.. No
I actually traded in a mesa for a line 6. Probably the best move I ever made as far as guitar amps go.

The RoadKing Series 2 has the Lone Star cleans, just like the Roadsters...

Yeah, I heard they really sorted the cleans out for the RK2. Too late for me though.
Although its not like I use much cleans in all fairness and as I use a Boss GT6 for a lot of my sounds, a Road King is a bit of a waste too.
The best thing is the programmable footswitch in the JVM. I have the GT6 set up on a channel and I can also ping in the organic tube sounds of the JVM at will and back again. It remembers all your settings.

Really? Thats an unusual opinion in my experience.
The main criticism I hear of Mesa over here is that they sound too "scooped" and no amount of tweaking can push the mids sufficiently. I dont know about that but I know that every Marshall I've ever owned, from the JCM 800 2210 I bought 20 years ago to the JVM now comes "alive" with the mids.
I think Mesas sound smoother and Marshalls more Jagged and crunchy.
I think Marshalls suit the brighter classic rock to heavy rock and metal and Mesa suits modern metal and blues although you can conjure most sounds from a Road King if not the normal Dual and Triple recs. Just my opinion though.
The JVM is a superb amp for the money and far more versatile than a Triple Rec but if you want that Mesa sound its pretty much game over because the JVM wont do it as well no matter how good it is even though the JVM has ridiculous amounts of gain.
Its all a question of what sound you're after. If you want a Marshall sound get the JVM. If you want a wider choice get the JVM (4 channels x 3 modes and programmable footswitch? C'mon). If you want a Mesa sound get the Triple Rec.

They sound too scooped because people scoop them.Every mark's eq is in V shape.
But they are plenty of mids.
KH Guitar Freak
10-05-2007, 09:19 AM
It could be the 6L6s vs. EL34s sound...
But that can easily be swapped around, and see how it goes...
Sometimes people just EQ it scooped, so it sounds scooped...
