I think im selling one of my crappy guitars since i have an offer, so anyone have any good suggestions fr a good practice amp? im happy with my live amp but my practice one is only 15 watts, not enough power for band practices etc. where a drummer is involved. im looking for something versatile, tube amp if possible (open to solid state suggestions) good tone like a randall v2.

Line 6 Spider III 75w is good for practicing. Its got some pretty good sound to it, and is plenty loud for the situation you described above, and I believe its only $299.

well the thd hotplate will deff colour your tone and its not that effective at bedroom levels thats not what it was designed for .the guy would be better with a smaller combo as a halfstack will require loud enough volume to get the best out of the tubes.line 6 spider 3 or randall rg series is what he should be looking into great small effective ss amps !

^the fuck are you talking about?

a hotplate allows you to run the amp at higher volumes but it absorbs the power generated allowing a smaller amount to be passed to the speakers. Probably the biggest reason they sell is to use high power tube amps in the bedroom.

"does the hot plate sound exactly the same? or does it fuck up the tone like ive heard?"

fuck up the tone? emphatically no.

exactly the same? nah I don't believe so, but i'm also capable of splitting hairs sometimes.

what i found using a marshall powerbrake was that device seriously muddied up the tone, made individual strings within a chord less discernable, and lost a lot of the highs. i ended up not liking powerbrakes at all.

then i tried a thd and it blew the powerbrake out of the water; i can't comprehend powerbrakes even existing on the planet, after hearing a thd.
and have you seen what they charge for a powerbrake? today it's like $415 or some insane horseshit. it's nuts, only old doofi who think "marshall anything = god" must be who buys those, is all i can figure.

thd's have a bass boost and a high boost, i don't find any need for the bass boost, the thd doesn't lose any bass,

but ALL powersoaks i know of will lose some highs, and more loss the higher of attenuation you're using.
so if i'm using half or more attenuation on a thd, i like having the high boost on, and then it sounds SO close to the original sound that imo it becomes true hair splitting to complain about it.

MORE importantly to me is that i found a good amp + a thd simply sounds so much better to my ears than any pod and most similar devices.

i think pods are good devices, but i would so much rather have my favorite amp (splawn ) plus a thd, than any pod.

but if i were in a college dorm, i'd just use a pod, less $ of item to get stolen, and easier to pack up and travel with.

yes we all know the 1st part but your last part is incorrect! the hotplate is not designed to get the best saturation from your tube amp at lower bedroom levels.more for smaller venues or clubs or practice space with your band to get better saturation from the amps tubes not at ear splitting vol.thats what the f**k im talking about also they will colour your amps tone but its not really that bad u can work with a thd i had one for a while !

What is a power attenuator?
A power attenuator is a device placed between the speaker output and the speaker cabinet. It acts like a huge master volume control and permits the amp to be turned up most or all the way while absorbing most of the power generated by the amplifier and turning this power into heat. It passes a small part of the power to the speaker.

Why do I want one?
Our customers use attenuators because their amps sound good at high volumes, especially with full distortion, but in rehearsal, small clubs, or at home, they can't turn the amp up.

yegh thats called sales speak ! sure the thd will cut the volume from the master source ie a tube amp but its going to sound like shit at bedroom level essp using the higher load settings on the attenuator.

ps have u actually used a thd hotplate? a good eq is a better option or overdrive pedal for boosting a tube amp and making it sound decent at lower levels .
