They had a lot more bass than any EMG I have played but I haven't tried a EMG 58 yet. I also had to back down the gain a little because the amp got boomy. the Blackouts sounded crunchier than the EMG 81, 85 or 60. I think it is a typical Duncan tone with a lot more gain than the passive pickups.

I honestly found the Blackouts to just be hotter, bassier, muddier EMGs. Not as tight, not as clear and defined.
