I've been thinking about replacing the JB that came stock in the bridge position. I am looking for more defined harmonics, a punchier attack, and a more focused "screaming" lead sound. I want to hear every note while having a lot of distortion going at the same time no matter how fast I play. I want a clean, precise and HUGE sound. I also would prefer not to go active. Any suggestions?

Bareknuckles are a little bit out of my price range. Has anyone tried the Dimarzio D Activators?

The Evo faimly may also be what you are looking out for...
You might want to check out some Dimarzios as mentioned. They are the only passive pickup I have much experience with. I think the Super 3 would be a bit too dark for what you want. What I have is the Evo2, those pickups are great. I've heard too much about the regular Evo's being a bit too bright for a lot of rhythm stuff, but the Evo 2 is toned down a bit more so it's not as harsh but still remains clear and cuts through anything.
And I'm not sure of your reasons for not going active, but if it's just being of things you heard or some misconception, don't completely dismiss them until you try them. I prefer my 81 over the Evo2 for rhythm, it's got more weight to it and is still a clear pickup.

I think the jb/59 set is perfect for the horizon II, and I play tech stuff all day long. Are you sure it's the pups that are the problem?

Have you ever checked out the Rio Grande pickups? Depending on whether you want to stay with an Alnico magnet or ceramic they offer some great choices. I recommend the Crunchbox for ceramic version or the Muy Grande for the Alnico version. These are great pickups and I much prefer them over the Seymour Duncans. Check them out at

They are good!

DiMarzio's are damn good when you find the right one. The Evo in my MH300 (Mahogany Body) sounds damn good when playing with distortion. Very clear, crisp, and a little chunky. Good for both rhythm and lead work.
But for cleans. Not the best due to it being a hot pick-up. I get some pretty good blues tones with break up.
I'd check into using the Duncan '59 as your bridge pick up. I've heard good things about it.

The Dimebucker is alright, but it's a bit too crunchy for my tastes. I have a set of Bare Knuckle Cold Sweats in my Horizon NT-II and they kick ass big time.

The Evo2 might actually be a better replacement to your Evo Robots...
But yeah, I vote on Tone Zone again... 8o

I have to agree with the Super 3. One of the best pups in the Dimarzio line and it seems only Phil Collens is the only one who knows :p

Save yourself the trouble of swapping pups and experiment with an EQ.

I have found the Dimarzio D-Sonic to do a lot of what you are looking for. In fact, I chose it over the JB, Evo, and Tone Zone for my #1 player. I still have those pickups in other guitars, except for the Evo. (Something else is getting ready to be modded...) The D-Sonic is very different sounding, though, and really seems to be a love it or hate it thing with most people. It took me a few days to warm up to it, but now, I think I might have to say it is my favorite pickup. It's not as tight and defined as the Evo or JB in terms of grind, but the lead sounds are so fat and vocal-like, without being too nasally. I have mine with the poles by the bridge, in standard tuning. (You can flip it, depending on your needs.)

I'm actually going to be chucking the EVO for an 81 (blasphemy I know) pretty quick here. But I do plan on buying a guitar made of Alder and tossing that in there.

I've been looking very closely at the Brown Sunburst NT-II - you seem pretty happy with yours. The only thing I don't like is the absence of the OFR which I like to have on my guitars. Everything seems pretty top notch (I'd rather have locking sperzels than the gotohs.) Seems like nothing in the current ESP standard line comes with the OFR unless it's black which I was considering (like the M-II), but I keep going back and forth - no one model seems to have everything that I want. Plus, I'm getting back into passive PUPs. I hopped on the EMG Active bandwagon several years ago, b/c I thought that was the thing to do and the thing to be playing but to be honest I never thought they sounded as good as the passives I had been using.

If you want more options check in about getting a Japanese model exported to you, or getting a custom built.
Or you could always buy an Ibanez or Jackson...

You can't get Horizon FR-II's in the US? Didn't know that.
