i'll wait to see what the image on the body looks like closer to completion but based on that last pic you posted, that one above (yours, and i guess new design?) looks really damn good. Can't wait to see the finished product.
did you ever decide on painting the neck or not?
ice7400
09-21-2007, 09:28 PM
Yes, I believe it will come out great. Mummy is the one that I've been after for a while.
About the neck, I decided to leave it alone since if shit does happen to my financial situation, at least I can get a bit more for the resell value since it's CustomShop.
Another thing is that I hate the feeling of stickyness on the KH-602's neck I had.

Looks good so far. Is he going to clear coat over the sticker?
ice7400
09-22-2007, 12:13 AM
Yup emg32. Bill, he will do 12 clear coats. I believe with that much of clear coat it will affect the guitar's sound a little.
My KH-4 surface seems very thick. When I played it and comparing with my Relic, the KH-4's sound seems a bit darker and less bright. So, I'm sure this mummy's sound will be a bit darker.

He should sand the finish back to where there is no clear on the face of the body or the headstock. With a poly finish, there is no need for 12 coats of clear. 3 tops. Guitars aren't the same as cars.

And it needs to be airbrushed as well, instead of a decal, why not say that as well. This is as close as any of us can get to a Mummy guitar, give the man some credit for doing a kick ass job, instead of saying it needs this and it needs that.

RRRCustom, Rob.
Here is how Bill do it.
The original finish was sanded then the decal was applied. The entire body was cleared with 4 coats of Du-Pont Chroma-Premiere Clear Coat (which is Du-ponts best clear coat). The entire body was then sanded, black was sprayed to hide decal edge, and entire body was sprayed with 4 more coats of clear. Then it was sanded and entire body was again sprayed with 4 coats of clear (12 coats total) then the entire body was sanded with 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit sand papers, and buffed to a Factory like shine. You absolutely can not tell it is a decal. The edge is completely invisible, and the finish is glass smooth. The job was done a long time friends hot rod shop where we do $100,000 +++ cars on a regular basis. (www.competition-specialties.com (http://www.competition-specialties.com))
Any suggestion?, I don't know much about clear coat but from my understanding is that if there are too many clear coat then the sound might be darker or less resonance.
Also, thxs for all the comments guy. I think Bill is the person who can make Mummy closet to Kirk's one.

The original surface was sanded with 600 grit paper, explain to me why I need to "remove" all the clear, it is a perfect base, it gets sanded because any time you paint a surface (in this case clear coat) it needs to be sanded to "open" the paint so the new paint bonds with the old. There is no need to strip the guitar....that would be crazy. As for the 12 coats.....poly or no poly, the decal needs to be buried under the clear so you can't feel the edge. The decal is 2.5 mils thick ( a mil is 1/1000th of an inch, not milimeters) a coat of paint(clear) is approx. 1/4 mil when cured. 4 coats (1mil) let it cure, spray black to hide the edge so you can't see it, and then 4 more coats of clear (2 mils) sand it and 4 more coats (3 mils) sand it flat and buff. rrrcustom, on the last decal job you did how many coats did it take to be able to sand the clear flat so you can't feel the edge any more? I would love to only need to spray 3 coats.
Ice...don't worry about the tone....even 12 coats of clear (approx 3mils) is still very thin, and I doubt there will be a noticable difference.

hey guys long time looker just never registered until now but i was wondering has anyone ordered a KH-2/ M-II from the custom shop and for the inlays asked them for the eye of horus and then applied the decal or got it airbrushed so that it would be like a real mummy even though i know Kirk owns the rights
oh god i hope it turns out ok, best of luck dude.
rrrcustom
09-23-2007, 10:28 AM
When I spray nitro, it takes about 6 coats to build the finish enough to level (headstock decals, I've never done a full body decal.)
Why don't you sand it back, past the color, so that only the sealer is remaining? Then you could spray the entire thing in black, then cover that in 4 coats of clear.

Thxs guy!
Thxs. Rob, Sean, Phil and etc etc.
Sean and Fade to Black,
I decided not to do the Eyes of Horus inlay, since it will cause too much trouble and trouble getting one. It will be much easier if the guitar doesn't have any inlay on it yet.
TREVA,
it's Bill (strngbyndstrng) who will do this paint job for me, he is professional hotrod painter. He also has Ouija, Lynch, Mummy, KH-3 decal for sale on eBay.
ZR80,
I can't disclose how much he charged me for doing this Mummy decal for me, but the price is not crazy. Cost of making for Bolty is cheper than Neck-thru though. You can email him though. If you are FANBOI like me, it worth every penny.
truckster,
Here is his previous work. It's just simply amazing, notice the graphic that wrap around the EMG. I'm speechless when I first saw it.

Isn't that the texture of the pick ups?
I mean they have a rippled effect in the plastic so it's a bit hard to make them not look like orange peel?

Just for your info, the pickups are not cleared yet in those pics. All paint dries with an orange peel texture, thats why you sand and buff.....

"All paint dries with an orange peel texture, thats why you sand and buff."
100% untrue. If you apply in light, mist coats, there is no ripple, drips etc. If that has been clear coated, that was not done properly.
Yes, it could be the texture of the EMG soap bar. Good call!

You going to get a finish like those straight from the gun by just doing " light mist coats" :\ with no sanding and buffing??? .......I think NOT. and like I said...those were not cleared yet.....not maybe they weren't...they definitely were not cleared yet

The ripples are from the surface of the EMG pickups you retard!

Reread what I quoted and responded to...
Mist coats of PAINT. I wasn't talking about clear coats there. Any varnish needs sanding in between. Don't misquote me.
I stand corrected about the clear coat not being applied since you're doing the work and you know what's been done so far.
My initial comment wasn't intended to bash you're integrity, it's called constructive criticism. But yes, I was criticizing something that wasn't even done, my mistake. I hope you also didn't fail to see that I said the work in general is outstanding.
And I made a mistake smash. Asshole.

Your right, i am.
I could tell straight up, even with out being the one doing the job, that the pickups hadn't been coated.
But to continue with comments like:
'I'd ask that the pick-ups be re-wrapped'.
'If he won't redo the pickups, MAKE SURE he takes his time on the body clear coat then!'
He is doing an unreal job, man I think he knows what he is doing. And he has done many before, and I am sure he will from this, do many more.

If you were to spray light "mist" coats, it wouldn't be glossy either. You have to spray it heavy to get it to be glossy without buffing.

It's too late, job is done! But that's a stupid statement anyway. If it were like that, then why even buy a KH-2, without doing any graphics, just buy a kh-202 or 602, they're similar? Why????? because He wanted an ESP Custom Shop with a Graphic, not a mass produced Korean Made LTD. Graphic or no graphic, the CS KH-2 NT Kills any LTD
