is it just like a mh 400 with no active emg's and with flamed instead of quilted finish? i love the trans green, but the only way i could get one is to get it online, so i would never be able to play it

They are pretty similar. Go play an MH-250, they're pretty much the same thing with shittier pickups and body wood. I have the 250... I put Seymour Duncan JB/'59's in it, and it sounds amazing. Very great guitars for the price.

Do you still have the old EMG HZ pickups? Are those any good?

What?
The 300 has a mahogany body and EMG-hz pickups. So it has far superior body wood and similar pickups compared to the 250. No shitty agathis on those...
And quality wise it's between the 400 and 1000(at least the one my friend had was).
About the same as a mh400...

We have both an late 90s transparent green m300 and an 07 mh400. The mh300 may be closer to the mh400 than the m300. In comparison the m300 came with hzs but we have replaced them with 81s,85s. The quality on the 300 was much better (not sure if it was just good luck with the 300 and bad luck with the 400.) Better action without fret buzz on the 300(both guitars were professionally set up (intonation, neck adjustments)), m300 has neckthrough, 400h has set neck. Neck profile better for leads on the M300 (smaller neck possibly not as rounded). A lot of work has gone into the m400h and it still does not play as well. (m400h nut filed (too high on 2 of the strings m400 h), nut not set (screws were loose m400h), plastic back plate was too large for the cutout (had to file), a portion of the bridge would hange up on the high E string when using the fine tuner (had to file the bridge)). I would take an m300 with active pickups over the mh400. The 400 looks a little better (in my opinion) and might sound just a bit better on the clean settings (mohogany body) The Mh400 also has larger fretts.

so if i play a 400, and like it, i could get a 300 (cause i like the green) and throw better pickups on it, and sometime a OFR instead of the LFR, and i would have a sick guitar.

It is a good guitar, my friend has one, but is no longer manufactured. I think that the LTD MH-400 to replacing. If I were you, buy the LTD MH-400 instead of the M-300.

why?

Because its a hands down better guitar IMO and in most peoples opinion. I would trade HZ's for a ZW set in a second, even for a few extra bones.

is it just the pickups? or what. they have the same wood, and are the same line. i simply like the look of the green. is there much of a diff other than the pickups. sorry i have so many questions, i just have never had a chance to play an ESP.

IMO the quality of build and wood was better back then. The mahogany used on the older 300's is a bit heftier and thicker than the wood used on the 301's and later 400's.

the 300 is basically a 400, but neck-through

yes, MH-400s are set-through although originally they were also neck-through

If I found a 300m or 300mh that played good (good action) and the price was good I would take it over the 400. I would definately get the active pickups, but figure it will run around 190 to replace the pickups with active emgs if you do it yourself. Yup could probably sell the used hzs on ebay though. If you have access to several 400s I would play them all and if possible lower the action as much as possible and get the one with the lowest action. Build quality could be better on the older ones as I have seen from my experience but it could have just been the guitars I played.

i will not have a chance to play a 300 before a buy. so all i could play is a 100 250 or 400.

Metahead, do not think that the 400 is set-neck. Set-thru is not set-neck. Set-thru is a combination of set neck and neck through. So, no +1 for the 300. The 300 has nothing on the 400 except a lower price and perhaps the personal preference of flame vs. quilted maple top.

Sure, I think its sexy. Personally I prefer QM over FM, though I like green more than any color. So I guess black QM (my guitar) and green FM are about equal in awesomeness. Same quality for the most part.
